Chapter 2
Sam was soon let out of the hospital and began living with the Donovan family. At first things were awkward between her and her new family.
Jake, the son of Ester, was only a year old when Sam started living with them, so it was never strange being around him. She would spend most of her days taking care of Jake while her new family was out working or taking care of errands. Sam had no problem, though, since it gave her something to preoccupy her mind. She didn’t want to think of what had happened to her, not because she didn’t want to find her real family, but because she was afraid of what she would find.
What if her family was the reason she was all bloody the night she was found? What if something bad happened to her family because of her? What if everyone she might have known was dead?
No, she wouldn’t think of the past. It was time to move on.

The more time Sam spent with the family the more at home she began to feel. Every week Ester would call the hospital and the police in hopes that they would have some lead as to who she was or where she came from. But every time it was the same. No record, no birth certificate, no nothing.
After about two months, Ester began to notice something weird about Sam. Whenever she would be outside in sun, Sam would become dizzy and if she stayed out too long she would sometimes even pass out. Sam was also becoming weaker as the days progressed. Sometimes she would have no strength and she wouldn’t even be able to pick her spoon to eat.
Not knowing what to do to help Sam, Ester took her to the hospital. They ran all sorts of tests on her. Sticking needles in her skin, taking samples of everything, running different types of scans on her, but not once did Sam complain.
After about a week a doctor called telling them that the results had come in. He said that she had Anemia and there was something wrong with the amount of blood cells she had in her body. She would need monthly blood transfusions; this was why she was always feeling so weak and tired. The doctor then added that she might have a sun allergy which was why she would pass out when she spent too much time in the sun. He said it wasn’t fatal as long as she didn’t spend a lot of time outside.
Sam was afraid that her new family wouldn’t want to deal with her diseases but she was proved wrong when they bought her lots of sunscreen and hats to keep her safe from the sun. Not once did they ever look down at her for having these problems but instead encouraged her.

So after four months, and no word from her real parents, Ester and Luke decided that it was time to take full custody of Sam and become her legal guardians.
It didn’t take long before it was approved and for Sam to finally feel like one of the Donovan’s. Her name was now officially Sam Donovan and she loved it. It meant she was part of the family and that she belonged. She wasn’t an outsider anymore and she never would be. After that day she would no longer dwell on the past but instead look towards her new future with this wonderful family.

During the first fall of Sam being there she was enrolled into the local elementary school. Because she had no birth certificate it was nearly impossible to say when her birthday was or how old she was. Most people would say she looked to be around seven or eight years old. So the parents thought it would be good to put her in with the second graders. And with Sam’s approval, they decided that her birth date would be the day they had found her, March 14th.
So once all the paperwork was filled out, Sam entered her first year in school. At first she had trouble getting used to the idea of always having to go out into the sun to get to school. Her parents had told the school about her conditions and they agreed to help Sam out in any way possible. This meant that Sam wouldn’t be able to go out for recess like all the regular kids.
The children in the class took some time getting used to her, seeing as she couldn’t go out to play with them. Sam didn’t complain, though, because she knew that it wouldn’t do her any good and she actually enjoyed watching the other kids run around and play. She liked to see their reactions to certain games and how they talked to each other.
That was Sam’s one weakness—not knowing how to talk to people except to her family.
It wasn’t long before she began to make new friends, despite her social skills. Some of the children would even stay inside with her during recess. There were times where some of them would leave to her to go outside and play, but there was one person who would always stay inside with her—Seth.
The two had become inseparable since the day they found out that they both loved drawing. They would spend all of their free time drawing all sorts of things together. Sam wasn’t really good at it but she loved drawing, but Seth on the other hand was an incredible artist despite being only 8 years old.
From then on Sam never felt lonely again because now she had a family to love her and a new best friend to play with. Life was getting better and there was definitely no way she was looking back now.

Mid-December there was an unexpected knock at the door. It was past midnight when the knocking woke up the family.
When they opened the door there was a teenage-looking boy with a suitcase in one hand and a letter in the other. Without speaking the boy handed them the letter. Luke reached out and grabbed the letter opening it. There was a pause before he looked toward Ester and said, “It’s for you.”
Slowly Ester took hold of the letter and began to read it out loud.
Hey Ester,
I heard from mom that you had a baby boy. Congratulations!! I’m really happy for you and Luke. I know what you’re thinking, “Why the hell is she sending a boy to deliver me a damn letter? After 16 years you’d think she’d at least give me a call.” I really am sorry that I never called or said anything. The truth is that I fell in love…or at least I thought I did.
Mom couldn’t stand me being with John. She even threatened to disown me. But then I found out I was pregnant. I was only 15 and mom would have made me give the baby up. What was I supposed to do? So I left. I thought about telling you but you were only 8 at the time. You were so young and I wasn’t sure you would understand.
I had a baby boy and he’s so wonderful. He’s a teenager now though. His name is Erik. I have to say that he is the love of my life and I couldn’t bear to ever lose him. But unfortunately life has other plans for me. Four years ago I was diagnosed with cancer. At first it was terrible but the doctors said I would be okay. But over time its worsened and the doctors have told me I don’t have much time.
So I’m writing this letter in hopes that you’ll take care of my son when I am no longer here. He’s almost 16 so he would only be with you for 2 years before he leaves to college. I know you hate me sister, but my son needs you…I need you. This boy standing in front of you is my everything so please take good care of him and always remember that I Love You Ester.
You’re Sister,
Lucy
As Ester read the last lines, tears had begun to pour down her cheeks. She walked up to the boy and put her arms around him, telling him that she was so sorry and that she would take care of him for as long as he needed.
Ester and Erik stayed up all night talking, Erik filling her in about his mom and Ester filling him in about their family situation—including about Sam.
So in just a year, the Donovan’s had gained two new members in their family.
