"Are you all right mom?"

My mom's head jerked up when she heard my voice. She had dark shadows under her eyes, and she looked ashen. "Yeah, yeah... Everything's fine, honey." She lied, fixing the hair that was stuck to her face in random places. I raised an eyebrow, and pulled out the chair across from my mom at our dining room table. I delicately plopped down in the chair, picking up a tiny sandwich meant for whoever my mom had coming over and began to eat, still watching my mom.

"You look tired." I stated bluntly, giving my mother a closer look. Her dark brown hair was half-up. The part that was braided looked okay, but the rest hung freely and was knotted and stringy. She was pale, though less so then when she had woken up. Her hazel/blue eyes that looked so much like mine seemed sunken. Even her clothes appeared slightly more ruffled than normal. She was obviously NOT alright.

My mom sighed, "I was up late last night working on a case. Ill be alright, though. You know how work is." There was a note in her voice that told me she was done talking. That was normal enough. After all, my mother was Sarah Willis, probably the most wanted lawyer in all of California; she was often up late working on the longer cases. I didn't know the details, but the few times I had been in her office, there were papers scattered everywhere. I had firmly decided I did not want to be a lawyer.

Shrugging, I looked at the clock hanging above the stove in our large kitchen. It read 3:45.

"Hey mom, didn't you say you had a client coming over at 4:00 this afternoon?"

"Yeah." My mom twisted her head to look at the clock behind her and jumped. "Oh my god, I've got to get ready!" She jumped up and rushed out of the room without giving me a second glance, but I didn't mind. In fact, I would have been worried if she had. We had an unspoken agreement- if I stayed out of her way and did good in school, she would stay out of mine.

I stood up and threw my uneaten sandwich in the trash, grabbing my iPhone from the table. I had finished my homework and I wanted to invite my friend Chelsea over. It was always fun to mess with mom's clients.

A/N: Okay, I know this was a reeeaaalllyyyy short chapter. I just wanted to kind of give you some perspective on Reyna's relationship with her mom. I am writing this on my iPod and so I know there will be some mistakes. Please be patient with the editing process! Also, I don't have the option for italics or bold sooo caps will just have to do- I'm sure you'll be able to figure out which goes where. Anyway, thanks so much for reading and please leave a comment to tell me how you liked it- don't worry, I won't hate you if you didn't like it ;p Please share this story and continue reading!
