"So let me get this straight" Hashi says when he's up. It was just last night that we have discussed the newfound that I was part demon and we were going to try and find my fathers legacy before my sister.
"You're trying to find something we don't even have the first clue to?!" Hashi howls loudly in my ear.
"Yes and we may not have the first clue but we know where it is. My old home." I say to Hashi pulling him down by his wings looking him in the eye. We were all on the top deck as Max was steering the ship toward the remains of my home, while Kenta was looking at a map, Kathryn guiding him since she also knew where the place is and I lost the coin toss in 'who told Hashi'. Of course, then we both knew he would react like this since the pup was almost always loud and asked questions always.
"We have to go back to that dusty creepy place!? I'd rather eat my fireproof scales and then be roasted! That's the place we got captured by the stinking pirates! No offense." Hashi barks. Max and Kenta squint at the pup angrily for a second but then Max take a deep breath.
"None took. Then again I was held prisoner when that happened." Max explains.
"ANYWAY, we are going to that house. I am not having my sister becoming a full demon to be the most powerful demon in the world." I growl. I could feel the red eyes coming back. My skull heating up as if underneath the earth's surface. I let go of Hashi and then grip my hands tight. I could feel the eyes of everyone on my back, as I closed my eyes tight and try to go to the railing. I take deep breaths to slow down my heart rate, to cool my mind as if the air would blow down the heat like blowing out candles. I feel myself calm and look over to everyone, most having fear in their eyes, especially Hashi, but also a concern. I look down at my shoes and sigh.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to.." I start but then I think of what I'm saying. Of course, I didn't mean it but that didn't excuse for what I did. I should have thought about how to control these abilities.
"It's ok, Lunar. We get it. Especially me. It took me a while to get used to being a vamp. Now it's just the same with you only being a stronger demon." Kathryn complies comforting while placing her hand on my shoulder. I look up to her to see a small smile and the others giving an encouraging look with smiling and fire in their eyes.
"Let's go get your dad's legacy before your sister does." Hashi barks joyfully. They go back to their stations, Hashi and I working on the ship's sails and working on the below deck.
"The ship usually does this magically on its own but if we want full power we should do what we can on our own to not use a power that could be used on speed," Max explained to all of us. So we were mostly acting as the cleaning and ship crew. Well, I was mostly doing it seriously while Hashi has been acting like a Pirate.
"Aye aye captain Max, we shall swab the deck while ye steers the pearl!" He screams.
"For crying out loud Hashi, would you stop fooling around and help me with the deck," I call. Hashi sighs and does his chores.
"How much longer?" I cry to Max, the wind whipping my hair.
"We'll be there in ten minutes, I suggest everyone prepares for battle," Max yells. We all nod and head down to the bunker of the ship with all the cots. I wear my police uniform with the badge off and the magical sword on my side as well as my shield on my back. I place a dagger in my boot and one in my sleeve. That will be a sharp surprise. I head back on the deck and see Kathryn dressed in full black clothing.
"Are You gonna get hot?" I ask her.
"Yes but, there's a reason vamps wear black, helps with invisibility and actually draws power. I'll be at full strength." Kathyrn explains. I nod my head in understanding. Kenta was wearing two straps of potions, over his normal sleeveless black top, army pants and black boots. He was steering the wheel while I guess Max was getting ready.
"We're right above the house. All you need to do is drop down. I have to stay with the ship and make sure we have defenses up with Max. He's getting the cannons ready." Kenta explains. I nod understanding the plan. I look over to Hashi and Kathryn.
"We will go down with you, Hashi will carry you down," Kathryn says, her wings unfolding from her back. I nod.
"let's go," I practically whisper. It was hard to think that if I go down there, it was a possibility I would have to fight my sister. I will always be one of your moons. I shook my head and let Hashi grab me by the back of my uniform. I sigh and nod to let him know I was ready. He starts to flap his wings and then we shoot down like a hawk going down to get a fish only spreading his wings like a parachute when coming down to the ground. Kathryn came floating down, like Mary Poppins only without the umbrella and Mary Poppins went dark or was going to a funeral. I take a deep breath. Why is this so hard for me?
Because you're worried about fighting your own sister. I shake my head and turn to Hashi.
"Hashi, could you do a perimeter check and see if my sister is here?" I ask. He nods and flies right away, almost like the cartoon roadrunner. I smirk to myself and then turn to Kathryn who has her eyebrows in a 'v', her eyes closed and slowly shaking her head. I give her a confusing look.
"You shouldn't call her your sister anymore. If you think of her like that still you'll go soft on her." Kathryn states. I sigh. Ok, maybe I have a sighing problem. I nod in understanding.
"What am I suppose to call her? Demon princess? A double-crosser? Straight out b***h?" I ask sarcastically. She gives me more of an intense look, almost saying 'really?'.
"You're scared of going against her. That's why you've been acting weird. Don't deny it." Kathryn spats. I was about to spat defensively when we heard panting. We turn to the side and see Hashi, his tongue out and starting to fly lower.
".... She's.... not..... here." He says before flying slowly to the ground. I quickly catch him and start petting his scales and fur.
"Did you see anything else?" I softly whisper.
"I saw... a dark figure... over there." He breaths, pointing a paw over to the north.
"Kathryn can you...?" I start but then I already see her eyes going red and her looking in the direction the paw was pointed in.
"I see it. Go to sleep Hashi you did great." She says softly to the sleeping pup. He nods and soon enough we hear snores of the sleeping pup.
"I'll carry him there and when we get there I'll accept the challenge and leave him with you," I explain to Kathryn. She nods in agreement.
"I'll keep watch over him until you're done. Let's go." Kathryn states and we start walking towards what Kathryn had seen. Later, when close enough in my view, I see a hooded figure and two twisted branches forming an arc. In the arc, it looks as if from a movie but seemed like shimmering white souls across a gray surface. It looked soft and had a curtain like flow. We keep on walking toward the dark hooded figure and as we kept on getting closer, the figure at first I thought would get bigger but actually was really small. It practically looked like the size of a toddler who had an oversized rain cloak. Instead of a parent though it had a long scythe three times its size. So, in other terms, someone's young kid was left alone in a dark cloak with a large weapon to protect itself. If that was the case this might be a really messed up dream. I walked up to it and cleared my throat to get its attention, Kathryn right beside me and the figure looking down. When it looked up at me the only thing to look at besides darkness was two oval shape white sockets. I tried to make eye contact and then it was like a rainfall of memories of so many deaths that went through my head. I came back to the present with a shiver and possibly a terrified look on my face. I look over to Kathryn and see her paler than ever and hugging Hashi.
"Are you her?" I hear from the figure. It wasn't a chilling voice as you'd think but more like an innocent child as if asking where do baby's come from.
The figure repeats "Are you her?" the oval slits changing size so one was larger than the other. I clear my throat getting the nerves out and ask
"depends who's 'her'?" questioning.
The figure's eyes, I guess, turn back to similarly sized ovals.
"one of my master's daughters. He has asked me to wait here until one of them comes in seek of his legacy." the hooded figure says almost cheerful. I take a deep breath and nod. I can practically feel the hooded figures joy as it flew in a twirl kind of way. It then stiffened and cleared its throat (if it had a throat) and kindly said
"Right this way," and floated toward the branch made the arc. I look over to Kathryn and she gave me a stone face back and a nod. She then let a smile crack under her nose to show she knew I could do this. I smile back and nod in appreciation. I walk toward the figure and take a deep breath to help give strength. The figure was obviously ready.
"Alright so here is what's about to happen; you go through the arc and relive the moments you feel like you're going to die. Not small events but really huge ones like a long bad day and you just need to push through them. After that, I shall give you part of the legacy." It said nodding. I take another shaky breath and walk under the arc, into a world unknown.
•••••••••••••••
I blink a few times after the shiny light and then see the world from before me. I see my parents coffins, my father's beside my mother's. I can feel the tears in my eyes welling up. This was one of the first hard time I had to go through. I look in the mirror at the funeral home and see my hair in a braid, a bow on top and a little black dress. I was my small three year old self, so I was pretty small. Well smaller.
"It's ok Lunar." I hear. I look over to see my aunt Myra in a long black dress, hair usual white long hair tied in a bun. Holding her hand was five year old Audrey, her red hair down and she too was wearing a black dress, though the Dora explorer shoes defiantly popped out.
"You still have a home with me and even so they'll still be in your heart." Aunt Myra coos and smiles. I smile back but let the tears trail down my cheeks. I still have the family in my heart. The scene starts to change and then I'm back at that night when my heart got broken for the first time. I of course new this lesson now: be careful of those who you keep close to your heart and you'll know if they are if you know them easily. Still I let the scene play and watch as Audrey claimed she was one of my moons. I still hold this lesson close though. The next scene was of the day the worlds collided, I saw my aunt Myra dying, me not able to stop it, the days of no sleep at all. This one had to hit the most of all. I wanted to scream stop, stop but I couldn't. I let the tears come down slowly. This was the time I wanted to go most but then I got hope that my sister was alive. Then that broke when I saw my real sister, the way she really is.
You still have a family, Lunar. In your heart and you have friends now who may become your made family. I hear a voice. I smile as I recognize it as aunt Myra. You're right Aunt Myra and I won't let you die in-vain. I then feel a cold wind and close my eyes to make sure nothing gets in them. I open them as soon as it feels calm and I see the figure and Kathryn, Hashi in arms, beside it.
"Congratulations, you have finished the first test."
