The water has turned a deep, glossy blue now that the sun has set.
Flynn and Gareth have set the boat's spotlight to point at the water toward the bow and are now throwing bait out into the water, hoping to attract something.
Sagan stands at the port side railing, staring intently at the water whilst her teammates fuss over how much bait to spread and how long they should watch for.
She keeps her eyes on the water.
Zanzi joins her, placing his hand on the section of her arm which isn't covered by leather armour.
"This is a bad idea... this thing hunts angels and they want to tempt it closer."
Zanzi sighs at her pessimistic tone and pulls her into a one armed hug.
"We're not going to let that thing hurt anyone else and I'm sure the angels can handle themselves."
He releases her and walks away, she continues to stare into the water. Zanzi's attempt at a pep talk has done very little in the way of soothing her fears.
She looks over to the area where the bait is and sees her teammates gawking at fish which have risen to take the bait, they're all so excited about it.
She looks back down at the water to the side of the boat and feels her heart nearly stop beating.
A shadow swims out from under the boat and then dives back down into the deep, the surface ripples slightly as it moves.
It begins to vanish back into the deep water and she watches it go with a feeling of admiration, a fish that size in this area must be some kind of shark. Her favourite animal in the human world.
She exhales and then walks over to where her friends are still celebrating the success of the bait. She watches the fish as they feed, her mind dwelling on what she just saw.
She loses herself to her own thoughts, staring blankly out at the baited water as the tropical fish feed hurriedly and one or two sea birds help themselves to whatever they can grab.
"Marine biology is such an intriguing thing."
Claire's voice is calming as she walks over to where Sagan is stood.
"Yeah the ocean is an interesting place."
Demon and angel share a moment of comfortable silence before Claire leans out over the railing to stare into the water.
The bait is nearly gone now, the others have finished with their observation session and are beginning to prepare to retire to their cabins. Sagan watches them leave one by one before she heads back into the work room.
She sits down at one of the monitors and checks over the data recorded whilst the fish had been feeding.
The sonar had picked up a large creature moving about within its range before it had vanished back into the deep.
She smiles slightly, the shark had been curious about the boat and she's glad no one else saw it.
She'd never forgive herself if the others had blamed the shark for the attacks, it didn't deserve to be put in danger for something it didn't do.
She turns the monitor off and heads to her cabin, shutting the door behind her before collapsing onto the bed.
She thinks of the students and poor Lily.
She had always been raised to hate angels but after years of working with them she'd come to push that prejudice to the side as she got to know them.
She grows tired and stands to strip off her armour before climbing into bed and falling asleep.
The dreams that plague her are filled with blood, water and the rough laughter of creature she can't recognise.
