Chapter Fourteen

Flynn wakes in a cold sweat, from the clock on his bedside shelf he notices that he's only been asleep for a few hours.

He isn't tired anymore.

Flynn knows what has just happened to him, a spirit link between his mind and the creature's.

He just witnessed the creature's murder through the eyes of the victim and his worst fears have just been confirmed.

Whoever killed the creature was in business with heaven, that was obvious from the figure being bathed in holy light and that spray of silver blood indicates that the attacker was of an angelic nature.

The tingling in his legs and one arm encourages him to get up and before he knows it he has entered the observation room and interrupted the demons' patrol.

"I need to tell you something and I don't want them to hear."

They take one look at the horror and anger on his face and stand up to move out onto the rear deck of the boat - no questioned are asked until the door is shut and Sagan has cast a spell to disguise their conversation.

"What's going on? You look like you've seen a ghost."

Zanzi's concern is palpable and it feels as though you could cut the tension in the air with a knife.

Flynn has to take a moment to breathe and brace himself before he starts to speak.

"I had a dream, I was reliving a memory. It wasn't my memory though... it was his."

He points at the dark water and the demons realise what he means.

Their expressions change from concern to disgust and finally a mixture of horror and anger as he recounts every detail of what he experienced. He can tell that they know he's missing out a key detail.

He tells them about the boat and the journals, about the moment he realised that the creature isn't some feral beast but a man who lost everything.

They have to stop Sagan from going to wake Sammael, her anger at heaven's involvement is raw and both demons are reminded why they have always been taught not to trust the angels fully.

It's Sagan who notices the sun rising on the horizon and they decide to tell Claire and Gareth about the new information after the dive.

Flynn still feels that they should use the shark cage, fearing that the creature may attempt to attack any angel it comes across without listening to reason first.

He's reminded that in order to prevent suspicions they have to play along and stick to Sammael's plan.

They go their separate way for the remaining hour before it is time to gather and then take on their tasks for the day, heading back to their individual cabins to prepare what they need.

Flynn decides not to wear one of his long sleeve diving shirts, placing the twisting black patterns in full view.

He's done hiding what he is.

He brings his tribal blade with him, strapping it to his thigh for easier access.

He has no intentions of raising it against the creature or one of the demons but in terms of his angelic employer all bets are off.

It's obvious that the angels don't like Hollow Borne and Flynn has decided that he isn't ready to die quite yet.

They eat quickly and then Sammael announces that he wants to get the dive done as quickly as possible because he has to go back to heaven for a day to report any progress.

Flynn notices the way his wings twitch when he says that.

Sammael is lying.

Flynn equips his dive helmet and air tanks before slipping into the water to wait for the others, he holds onto the metal bar at the back of the dive platform and stays there.

Suddenly the water and the creature aren't the scariest things he has to watch out for.
