We were sitting in a room. We were near where we set up the traps so we could hear the bell. All we did was talk. I told him all the adventures I've been through for the past two months. His hair was growing. Not much of a difference from when I last saw him, but I could tell it was growing.
I smiled at him. "We need to trim your hair." I spoke to him lightheartedly. We sat across from each other. Well, it was a small space, so our legs still touched.
Sam gave a small laugh. "I told the people, but they said they were too busy." A moment of silence. "Cassie?"
I looked up signaling for him to talk.
"Can you tell me how Dad died?" His voice grew softer and quieter.
"Sammy, not right now," I begged.
"Please, Cassie." Puppy eyes. Damnit. I knew I had to tell him, but not right now.
I sighed. "You and I separated. I decided to just stay with Dad and the other parents and adults. I heard things getting rowdy in there, and Dad told me to not go inside with them." I took a breath. "I hid behind a car and observed from a distance. Then the adults flashed out their guns, and the soldiers just killed all of them. Not even stopping to tell them to settle down. They shot them all, and I saw."
Sam's eyes shone with tears. "Are we going to be okay, Cassie?" It slid over to him and wrapped my arms around him from the side.
"Yeah," I nodded. "I'll protect you. I promise."
After another few minutes of silence, Sam asked, "Hey Cass, do you think that Uncle Johnny will be glad to see us again?"
"Of course he would." Uncle Johnny was rejoicing when he saw that I was alive. "He was to see me. He'll be more than happy to see you."
"Why can't we go to the Right Arm now?" Sam questioned with his voice getting louder.
"Sam, please keep it down," I pleaded. "I don't want people to know we're here."
Then we heard a bell go off and someone saying loud and panicked, "What kind of klunk is this?"
"We caught someone," Sam said excitedly. He bolted out to the traps, and I got up and followed him.
"Sam," I said running after him, "wait."
Sam went to the traps, and there was a black boy hanging upside down from some rope. There was him, a scrawny looking dirty blonde boy, some Asian dude, a brown haired guy, and a girl and two others.
Sam said, "Don't move." He pointed my 9MM pistol at them. They had their hands up. I need to get my pistol back from him.
I caught up to Sam and brought my M16 rifle out and pointed it at them. I had steady hands. A good grip. I wouldn't hesitate to shoot at them.
"Who are you?" I asked while pointing my gun at them. Voice steady: check. Correct stance: check.
The brown haired boy said, "Look, we don't want to trouble you. We're just trying to get somewhere." He sounded tired.
