Chapter 2
Tiger POV: Uriah
My third year of being a Tiger in the academy wasn't anymore enjoyable than the other two years thanks to my bonehead of a captain.
Wayne was too strict at times. Tobias let all captains create their own rules for the houses to give them leadership experience, and Wayne definitely took it overboard.
Especially when he told us not to associate with anyone in the other houses, no matter what.
I felt like defying him but I didn't for two reasons. One, I didn't want to bother arguing with him because he would get mad and he had an annoying voice. And two, there really wasn't anyone worth socializing with, as conceited as that sounded.
With four new Tigers this year, Wayne didn't take long to lay down the rules to tell them not to talk to anyone or make friends with anyone in the other houses.
Nobody ever tried getting him to change his mind but for some reason, Astrid did this year.
Like every year the day before classes started, the school held a party for all houses so they could get to know one another. Even then, Wayne wouldn't let us talk to anyone.
"You're being unbelievable, Wayne," Astrid said. She, Wayne, and I were standing near a wall during the party, watching everyone else. "No other house has that rule."
"Because we're not like the other houses," Wayne said. "We're better than them, and we don't want to be seen socializing with them."
"Seen by who?" Astrid asked. "The other houses? Because that makes total sense."
"I don't care if it makes sense or not," Wayne said. "No other Tiger complains about it, right Uriah?"
"I honestly don't care at all," I said.
"See?" Wayne said. "He agrees with me."
I wanted to correct him by saying I told him I didn't care, not that I agreed with him. Too bad he was too stubborn to understand.
At times, I honestly wondered how he became the captain of one of the houses of a gifted school when at times, it seemed like he didn't have an inch of logic in his body.
"Why are you even complaining?" Wayne asked Astrid. "You didn't last year."
"That's because it's my brother's first year here, and he's not a Tiger," Astrid said.
"Okay, he may be your brother, but he's a not a Tiger so you're not allowed to talk to him," Wayne said. "If you do, I'll make your life a living hell."
"Oh, please, my life is already a living hell being in the same house as you," Astrid said. "How can you make it even worse?"
"You'll see," Wayne said before walking off.
Astrid scoffed and looked at me. "Please don't tell me you actually agree with him."
"I don't," I said. "I honestly just don't care at all. I don't talk to people in general, so I don't have any problem. But yeah, he is taking it too far. I wouldn't take him seriously though. He can't stop you from talking to your brother."
"We all know he's going to try," Astrid said. "Too bad I'm going to challenge him and not care what he says. I could talk to my brother all I want."
"What house is he in?" I asked.
"Coyote," Astrid said. "He's an amazing artist. It took me a long time to convince him to see if he could make it in here, and he finally agreed. He was a bit nervous because he thought he wouldn't get accepted, so I had to keep telling him that everyone single person was nervous."
"I wasn't," I said.
Astrid rolled her eyes. "Of course not, you conceited ass."
I just shrugged as Astrid looked around the small ballroom where the party was before her eyes landed on a boy sitting off in the corner. He soon noticed her looking at him,and she gestured for him to come over.
The closer he got, the more I realized that he was probably the most attractive human being on the planet.
Well, besides me, of course.
"Uriah, this is my brother Levi," Astrid said once he brother was standing beside us. "Levi, this is my friend Uriah. He's a Tiger like me, and he's probably the most conceited person you'll ever meet."
"You call it conceited, but it's really just being confident," I said.
"No, literally everyone says you're conceited," Astrid said.
"So?" I asked. "I don't see anything wrong with it."
"Exactly why you're conceited," Astrid said before looking at her brother. "By the way, I'm not allowed to talk to you."
Levi furrowed his eyebrows. "Why?"
"Remember how I told you the Tigers' captain doesn't want us associating with any other houses?" Astrid asked, and Levi nodded. "Apparently, you being my brother won't change that."
"So... you're not going to talk to me for the rest of the school year?" Levi asked.
"Don't be stupid," Astrid said. "I'm talking to you right now, aren't I?"
Levi sighed. "I'm a stupid human being."
"Quite," Astrid said. "Hey, Uriah, I know you said you don't care about the whole not being allowed to socialize with other houses, but want to do me a favour and defy Wayne's rule for a few moments?"
"How?" I asked.
"I want to get some punch, so you can stay here and make friends with my brother," Astrid said. "And I'm not taking no for an answer because Wayne's a dick and I don't want to be the only one defying him."
"Uh, sure," I said.
"Sweet, thanks," Astrid said before walking off to the refreshments.
"So, how do you like being a Coyote so far?" I asked Levi.
"It's good," Levi said. "The captain's nice."
"Yeah, all the captains except for Wayne are nice," I said. "So I would probably steer clear of him."
"Oh, trust me, after all the stories my sister told me about him, I plan to avoid him the best I can," Levi said. "Though it shouldn't be too hard if he doesn't want to talk to anyone who isn't a Tiger. I just hope he won't actually disallow Astrid to talk to me."
"Even if he does, I'm pretty sure she's not going to listen to him," I said.
And I just might not listed to Wayne as well because right now, there was actually someone worth defying the rules for.
