Chapter 6
Tiger POV: Uriah
Dodge ball tournaments; the one day I both looked forward to and wished would never happened. If Wayne wasn't the captain of the Tiger house, then I definitely would have been excited to it. I was a very competitive person but Wayne? Wayne took competitions to a whole new level.
Even I knew when it was just a friendly competition and didn't had to be taken so seriously.
This dodge ball tournament, one of the few times the houses had a friendly competition, was always the worst of them all.
Everyone was in the gymnasium right now, getting ready to start the tournament. Each house was in their own corner of the gymnasium to talk with the people that were going to participate in the tournament.
And Wayne was going over a game plan.
I honestly just tuned him out like I did most of the time he talked. His voice was way too annoying for me. The only time I did listen to him was when I wanted to fall asleep because it could happen in a matter of seconds.
"Okay, Wayne, I seriously think we don't need a game plan," Astrid said. "There are way too many possibilites on how the other teams were play. We can't predict anything."
"We can predict us losing with that attitude," Wayne said. "So this is what we're going to do. We are going to pick out the stronger ones and focus solely on them. And then we..."
"I have a better idea," I said, hoping it could get him to stop talking. "We pick up a ball, throw it at people on the other team, and catch any balls flying towards us."
"I support that plan," Astrid said. "Sounds thorough enough. This is why Uriah should be the captain of the Tiger house."
That definitely hit a sore spot on Wayne as he immediately glared at Astrid. "He doesn't take competitions seriously."
"Uh, I would like to point out that I do," I said. "But only when they're worthy of being taken seriously. Basketball, soccer, football, basically any game against other teams from other schools are worthy of being take seriously. A dodge ball tournament within the school is not."
"Do you remember what the winners got last year?" Wayne asked. "A pizza party. Before that was a sundae bar and before that was a variety of chicken wings. It's not often I eat junk and when I do, I would like it to be worth it."
"We've been winning every year," Astrid said. "I don't think we need a game plan. We do what's simple. Grab the ball, throw the ball, catch the ball, dodge the ball. Self-explanatory."
"You know, I wish I chose you two to sit out in the tournament," Wayne said. "I'm the captain so we're doing what I say. Now, here is the game plan."
I tuned him out once again because I was totally not going to follow his game plan, especially if it didn't work with whatever the other teams were doing. Which was most likely grabbing, throwing, catching, and dodging.
And if I wasn't as competitive as I was, I probably would have thrown the match just to piss of Wayne. I did want to win as well. I just didn't want to win according to Wayne.
After a few more minutes, the order of the first two matches were told. Tigers against Owls, and Dolphins against Coyotes. Afterwards, it depended who won and lost each most.
"Oh, sweet," Wayne said. "We're going against the nerds first. This should be easy."
"You know, I would undermine their athletic abilities," Astrid said. "I mean, it's obviously going to be nowhere near ours but that doesn't mean they're not going to put up a fight."
Wayne snorted. "Yeah, right."
Astrid was right. We shouldn't undermine their abilities. It even got up to the point where there was two of us and one of them.
It was even better when Wayne wasn't one of those two.
Unfortunately, he blamed it on us.
"See? This is what happens when you don't follow a game plan," Wayne said.
"Hey, you followed the game plan and you got out," Astrid said. "Don't blame us."
"If we all followed the game plan, it wouldn't have happened," Wayne said. "Whic, by the way, we're going in the next round."
Yeah, that wasn't going to happen.
We all sat down on the bleachers to watch the match against the Dolphins and Coyotes, which I was definitely enjoying watching. Levi was one of the Coyotes on the team so I definitely didn't mind watching him.
Astrid and I were sitting together without anyone else around, so I leaned over to her. "Head shots aren't allowed in the tournament, right?"
"Yeah, why?" Astrid asked.
"Because I wouldn't want Levi getting hit in the face," I said. "That's definitely his money maker."
Astrid furrowed her eyebrows and looked at me. "What?"
"What? He's attractive. What are my chances with him?"
"Is this you're way of coming out?"
I shrugged. "I don't really see the point in coming out. People like who they like and labels shouldn't matter. So...?"
"Well, as Levi's sister, I regret to inform you that it is confidential. But as legally as I'm allowed to put it..."
"Legally?" I interrupted. "Did he make you sign a contract regarding his sexuality?"
"Again, that's confidential. Anyway, like I was saying, as legally as I can put it, you have a better chance than the females."
"Sweet," I said.
"Is this why you and Nevaeh broke up?" Astrid asked.
I released a deep breath. "To be honest, I'm not sure. I'm one of those people that don't believe in labels. I just... I see people for who they are and not for what's in their pants. If anything, Nevaeh was annoying me too much so I dumped her. That, and I'm pretty sure she and Wayne are secretly seeing each other."
"Doesn't that bother you?" Astrid asked.
"Nope," I said. "They're perfect for each other."
