The trollhunter sat down on a rock, holding his head between his hands. Jim, Toby, and Claire had been searching for hours with the aid of a very stressed Draal. The group had followed a trail of footprints for miles, only to have them stop in thick grass deep in the woods.
If Jim had to be honest about the situation, he would say that he was terrified. Blinky was like a dad to him, and the trollhunter couldn't bear the thought of losing him. Toby had been looking over the dart closely as they walked, and he explained to Jim that it was at least twice as big as ones used for people; it seemed to explain how the kidnapper had managed to penetrate a troll's rocky skin and tranquilize Blinky. Since there had been so intrusion into the caves themselves, Draal surmised that the gum-gums had found Blinky by chance and didn't know where they were. Even so, Jim felt uneasy and sealed the east entrance.
Aargh was managing activity in the caves while the others were searching; he had wanted to help look but recognized that his help was needed in the caves. The others listened; maybe not as well as they listened to Blinky, but they recognized that Aargh was the only real authority at the minute. The large troll's heart throbbed every time he thought of what could be happening to his love; now more than ever he wanted to hug him, to kiss him, to just have him there beside him.
The two had never been affectionate in public; troll society wasn't prejudiced against gay couples, but the two just hadn't made any moves towards a public relationship. A big part of that, which neither ever mentioned but knew to be there, was that Blinky was very nervous with any kind of touch, taking many years to be comfortable with Aargh. With Aargh being an ex gum-gum general, he was scared to risk hurting Blinky on accident. So their relationship stayed casual, but it was the closest relationship possible in terms of emotional connection. Being apart from Blinky was the most horrible feeling Aargh had had in a long time.
When the humans and Drall came back again sans Blinky, Aargh tried not to let his sadness show through too much. They hadn't come back entirely empty handed though; Jim had a plan.
It went as follows; capture one of Gunmar's followers to learn Blinky's location, or at least gain information on where Gunmar's forces were mustering. Then use Claire's shadowstaff to portal into the fortresses and rescue Blinky. It wasn't great, really more of an idea than a plan, but it was all they had.
Curling up in the corner that he normally shared with Blinky, Aargh missed his little friend's warm, reassuring presence. Blinky always knew what to do; how could they possibly manage without him?
