Blinky was shaken from his dazed state by the sound of boots in the hallway outside his cell. The weaken troll scrambled to the corner farthest from the door, muscles screaming in pain. The sudden movement jarred his broken arm, forcing Blinky to clap a hand over his mouth to stop himself from crying out. The barred door was opened and the blue troll braced himself for more pain; it never came. He blinked with surprise as a limp changeling was thrown into the cell beside him.
He automatically reached down to the prone figure, helping the other troll sit up on the raggedy pallet in the corner. The other unfortunate prisoner was a tall purple female, with ebony hooves and a shock of short inky hair crowning long horns. She was covered in marks similar to his, but thankfully she didn't seem to have any broken bones. Her eyes fluttered open, widening when she saw him. He covered her with the one threadbare blanket they had and sat back,asking gently, "Are you alright? What is your name?"
Blinky didn't expect her to scream and attempt to scramble away from him. Her eyes were full of terror, and she croaked hoarsely, "You look like him. Please, don't hurt me no more no..." She trailed off, her lips moving soundlessly. Blinky was horrified and shook his head adamantly, replying firmly, "That monster is unfortunately my brother, but I am nothing like him, and I promise not to hurt you. As you can see, I have been treated the same as yourself" Blinky indicated his broken arm, hanging at an awkward angle, and she cringed in sympathy.
Her expression softened, and she said, "Sorry. It's just been horrible. The prisoners are forced to fight for entertainment, and I've already survived two fights. My name is Kyota. And you?" They shook hands and Blinky introduced himself, explaining that he had been leading remaining free trolls and had been kidnapped. She nodded, explaining, "I have heard much of you. The prisoners hear news of your resistance from spies and spread it, it gives us all so much hope." She laughed a little and added, "We change the messages and make sure the guards overhear. So far some think that you're all hiding in the mountains, while others are convinced that the free trolls are magically concealed in trollmarket somehow."
Blinky smiled at this bit of good news, but both froze when they heard heavy footsteps marching towards their cell. Sure that the guards were coming to grab him, Blinky quickly whispered in Kyota's ear, "I promise you that we will escape. Stay alive, stay alert." She nodded, and the guards dragged Blinky away.
