Chapter 17

He kicks the door to my flat shut and carries me further inside, past the kitchenette, past the couch and towards the rooms.

He stops at the two doors on opposite sides, one leading to my bedroom and the other to Tina's. Through the crack under Tina's door I can see that her light is off. She normally sleeps with a night light on. Guess she's got a date after all. I wonder if she's getting laid right now.

"Right," I say, and giggle at my dirty thought.

I really need to stop giggling. This is so...not me. I'm dark, and broody and serious. Not this giggly girly-type I've turned into now... Even, I' m annoying me.

Hopefully, Riaan doesn't think of me as one of those flighty, frivolous women who are permanently trapped in the giddy mind of a teenager.

Flip it. He can think whatever he wants. I don't care...Or do I?

Maybe I should stop thinking. Completely. For now.

Riaan opens my door, still carrying me, and unceremoniously dumps me onto my bed. I hiccup and we both start laughing. Well, at least his irritation is gone.

"Promise me you will never drink like that again," he says.

My light is still off and I can't see his face properly.

"Great. Just what I need. Another Rahul nagging me. But, yes... I promise."

He turns to leave, pulling my door slightly as he goes.

Well, he really couldn't wait to get rid of me, now could he? Out the door without even a goodbye.

What were you expecting, Layla? A bedtime story and a goodnight kiss? Well, it's the least a silly little girl could expect, right?

I giggle again.

I need to stop giggling . This is so...not me. I've already said that...God, just go to bed.

Well, I'm home and I'm safe. That's all that matters now. I can do damage control and a dissection of tonight's events when I wake up. Better get some sleep.

But not in these clothes. I'd never fall asleep in these. I stumble out of bed and kick off my sneakers, pull off my jeans, my top and my bra. My clothes smell of cigarettes drawing me back to the last three hours at Don Jose's.

Okay, bedtime young lady. You have work again in a few hours.

I'm left with a thin white camisole on and a pair of white, stretchy cotton boy shorts. Much better.

I'm about to climb back into bed, when my door opens and my light flickers on.

Oh, shit.

It's Riaan. He hasn't left. He's at the door standing there. A glass of water is in his hand. He looks at me wide-eyed, probably as shocked as I am.

"I...uh...I thought you left," I stutter.

He doesn't move or say anything. I can't either. I'm fixed to the floor like a deer caught in headlights. Time ticks by and neither of us moves. Well, at least that's how it feels to me. Finally, he breaks the moment, pulling his eyes away from me.

Clenching his jaw, he walks towards my cupboards.

He places the glass of water on my dresser and opens a few drawers, searching around in them.
