Chapter 34

I finish my shower and change quickly. The only things that will fit me in Riaan's closet is a pair of stretchy boxer briefs which barely cling to my hips, and one of his work shirts.

I look in the mirror. How can I look the part of seductress in these baggy, oversized clothes? I towel dry my hair quickly and go in search of Riaan. I don't want to give myself time to think and second guess myself.

I head downstairs moving slowly. The house is unfamiliar to me so I tread cautiously. There are down lighters here and there that throw soft, muted light along my pathway, just enough for me to find my way.

I take the stairs.

Riaan said he would be sleeping on the couch but when I get to the living area the couches are empty.

The downstairs is open plan and spacious. There is a dining room, a kitchen and a living area. It is beautifully decorated and from the little that I can see in this poor lighting, I can tell that each piece of furniture is exquisite.

Everything has clean edges and harmony. But it also has a lived-in, comfortable look to it too. The soft couches and scatter pillows add warmth and the coffee table, fashioned from reclaimed drift wood has a large stack of beautifully bound books on top of it.

I was right about the glass face to the house. The living area has a massive, full-length glass wall that overlooks Camps Bay and the vast Atlantic Ocean, just like the main bedroom and bathroom. The glass wall is more of a stacking door here that leads to a balcony. But this door is locked, so he's definitely not there.

I look around and find a passage leading out of the double volume living space. I walk down it. There is a room open with a ladder standing inside it. It is barely visible in the semi-darkness. The smell of fresh paint drifts out from it. This must be the guest room he was talking about. I walk past it and come to another door. It is left slightly ajar. I can hear Riaan's voice. He is on the phone.

Is it Stephanie he's talking to?

Pangs of guilt wrack through me. What am I doing? I stand there, unsure now. I should just turn and leave while I still can.

"Is that you, Layla?...Hang on a sec, Dave. Come in, Layla. I won't be long."

He knows I'm here. I can't escape now. I open the door gingerly and enter. I find myself in a study. There is an office desk and a small leather couch in here. Riaan is sitting behind the desk in a brown leather office chair. The desk is littered with rolled up scrolls, paint swatches and pieces of fabric.

He goes back to his conversation with Dave. His eyes are fixed on me. His one eyebrow is slightly raised, giving him a questioning look.

I can't do this. I should just turn around and leave now while I can still move my body.

"Okay Dave, email me those specs now before leaving. The sooner we set up this meeting, the better. I'll keep in touch with you."
