Chapter 30
Well, that was an uncomfortable moment with David, Riaan and Rahul all together at the same time. But I don't care. I'm on a high.
Blood is still rushing through my veins at breakneck speed. The thrill of completing this performance without any hitches- in fact with numerous words of congratulations- is exhilarating.
I start removing the makeup on my face. Looks like I'm going to need a wad of wet wipes to get the job finished. I remove the jewelry, and start taking off the flowers from my hair.
Tina comes in.
"Almost done?" She asks.
"Just about. Help me with my hair, T."
My mother would have done the job in five minutes flat, but she and Kumari Devi have left, having dinner plans of their own.
"That was some show you put on out there," Tina says, a sly look on her face. "You had the guys panting, you know. Well, at least Riaan and David were a bit hot under the collar. I snuck a look at both of them."
Tina giggles.
"Gosh T, if that was the case, my whole exhibition was worthless. That wasn't the point I was trying to get across. My point was about how woman are seen as objects and treated..."
"Hang on, hang on, La," Tina waves her hands in the air. "Your point came across loud and clear. But some of your moves were damn hot, babe. If I were a guy I'd be having some nasty thoughts too."
Trust Tina to say these things. I smile at her.
"There all done. Go change and lets get moving. We need to unwind a bit. I think David must be getting a royal roasting from both Riaan and Rahul by now. The air around them was pretty uncomfortable when I left."
"You left him alone with them? Are you crazy?"
"Relax, I'm sure they are being decent. The quicker you change, the quicker we can rescue him."
I get out of my white tights and top and pull on my jeans and a t-shirt.
Tina becomes still. "La, you know I love you right? You are like a sister to me."
"I know,T. I feel the same way."
"Well, there's something I need to tell you..."
Her voice trails off. She's finding it hard to say. This must be serious. She looks serious.
Tina's never serious.
"You're pregnant," I whisper.
"What? No, don't be ridiculous," she slaps my hand and grins. "Never mind it's not that important. We can talk about it tomorrow."
I want to have this conversation now. It's so rare to see Tina like this, but I also don't want to leave David too long with my brother and Riaan.
"T, you know we can talk about anything, right? But if you say it can wait till tomorrow then, okay. We'll talk tomorrow."
Tina nods her head, and we leave it at that for now.
We go out to supper and have a wonderful evening. Tina and I are chilled and giddy with the prospect of exams being over and several months of doing absolutely nothing ahead of us.
And David proves to be a witty and charming guy too. We go to a sushi bar in Sea Point and we get a table overlooking the bay. People are out walking and jogging. Cabs stop to off load groups of party goers starting their night time revel at their favorite haunts.
