The children were in bed,All tucked in their sheets,
While mother sat in the kitchen
Staring out the window.
The moonlight splashed on her face
As if finding a fallen star.
Her eyes were blurry
With tears of pain and longing
For someone she
could not find,
Could never find,
Ever again.
Silently and slowly,
A wet emblem of sadness
rolled down her cheek.
Finding her chin,
Falling off a cliff,
Landing alive -
But in pieces.
Then soaked up by her shirt,
To never be seen again.
She forced herself to look
Down at the table,
To look at the unspeakable truth.
The telegram seemed innocent at first,
Before screaming and
Ripping her life, soul, and heart
To shreds.
Who would have thought
Three little words
Could ruin this woman's life?
