"Where the hell have you been?" A voice shouted.
I looked over to the door from my tv screen to see Kara barging in to my apartment.
"Nice to see you too, Kara." I replied, smiling and pausing my tv show.
"You've been gone for a whole day." Kara sighed.
"I was in Smallville. You know how Martha can be." I laughed shortly. I mean, it wasn't a complete lie.
Kara came over and sat down on the couch next to me, causing me to sit up to allow her more room.
"What happened? I can tell something's wrong." I said, turning to fully look at her.
"I wasn't going to say anything because I know you don't want to get involved in all of the superhero drama, but I just need to talk to somehow who will get it. A Kryptonian. And with Clark being so far away..." Kara trailed, giving a stressed look.
"Kara." I said, looking pointedly at her. "Tell me what's been going on."
"Alex has been working for a secret government called the DEO." Kara began, sighing.
"Great Rao. And you're just finding this out now?"
She nodded. She then told me how she had been attacked by a Hellgrammite, which was an alien species that had the ability to disguise itself to look like a human as well as shoot venomous spikes that were strong enough to pierce metal.
"And what happened?" I asked, knowing there was more to it.
"He took Alex."
"What??? Did you guys get her back? Is she alright?" I asked. I wasn't close with Alex, considering I had no real relationship to her, but she was, at least in the people of Earth's eyes, my distant adopted cousin. But I knew she was important to Kara. And Kara was important to me.
"She's fine now, she's resting at the DEO. I'm going to go check up on her after I'm told that she's woken up." Kara nodded.
I looked at her, seeing the worry lines creasing between her eyebrows. "There's more. You have that look you get when you're thinking about something that stresses you out."
"When I went to look for Alex, I found her in a warehouse. And then I saw.." Kara paused. "My mother. Or who I thought was my mother anyway."
"I'm sorry, Kara. I know how hard that must have been for you." I said, gently touching her arm, ignoring the spark I felt as I made contact with her. I'm here for Kara just as a friend, I can't let my feelings for her cloud my thoughts.
Kara smiled briefly at me, but then frowned again as she continued. "Well this woman may not have been my mother, but it was just as hard to see her. Her name was Astra."
Red flags! "Astra?" I asked, trying to sound curious but not shocked.
"Yes. Why? Have you heard that name before?" Kara asked, raising an eyebrow.
I quickly thought of an excuse. "Maybe while on Krypton, but I can't remember that well."
Kara nodded. "That was probably where you heard it. Astra is my mother's identical twin sister."
My eyes widened. Astra was Kara's AUNT?
Kara continued, "Astra was a fanatic eco-terrorist. She and her husband Non attacked places and people on Krypton in an effort to 'help us realize that we were destroying the planet.'"
"I think I briefly remember something about attacks..." I trailed, still in shock. Astra..
"She was the one who sent the Hellgrammite after me and then Alex to lure me to her. She tried to talk me into joining her cause before she attacked me." Kara said.
Tell her. Tell Kara that Astra met with you too!
"Anyway, some of the DEO operatives showed up and she fled. But I'm sure she'll be back."
I nodded.
"I should get back." Kara sighed, standing up. I stood up with her, walking with her to the door.
"Thank you for listening to me." She said as soon as we reached it. I smiled.
"Anytime, Kara."
How badly I wanted to kiss her then. But, sadly, that was not what fate had in store. And so, I watched her leave.
