6: The Snake Pit

After a particularly difficult Arithmancy lesson, Hermione rolled her shoulders trying to remove the stiffness of having sat in classrooms all day. She had seen very little of Draco and even when she had, they hadn't been able to speak to one another. They had been forced to contend with only a few stolen glances across the great hall at lunchtime.

If Ginny and Blaise had noticed their friend's sly attention towards one another, they never made any mention of it while the other Gryffindor's and Slytherin's in Hermione's and Draco's friend groups remained oblivious to what was happening right in front of them.

Falling onto the couch in their common room, Hermione sighed and thought to close her eyes for a few moments. She wasn't tired, in fact, she felt more awake then she had been since the battle. However, no matter how hard she tried not to dwell on it, Evelyn's letter had unsettled the young witch.

Thankfully, she didn't have long to think over the healer's words as Draco arrived with news of his own.

'Hermione!' He called out as he entered.

'I'm right here,' she replied, sitting up from the couch.

Draco ran towards her with a big goofy smile on his face, 'You'd never guess what happened today.'

Hermione laughed at his overly childlike behaviour, 'Whatever happened clearly has you in a good mood. Tell me!'

Draco grinned widely before kneeling in front of the couch, 'I was named Quidditch captain for Slytherin.'

'Merlin, that's amazing!' Hermione squealed and threw her arms around Draco's shoulders.

Draco pulled her in closer, 'I never thought I'd ever be asked back here, let alone be head boy and Quidditch captain.'

'You've earned this,' Hermione said, leaning back to get a good look at his face, 'And you deserve it, Draco. This and so much more.'

Draco shook his head, 'I don't deserve you,' he whispered, 'But I swear to Merlin, I will spend every day trying to be worthy.' They rested their foreheads against one another, 'Worthy or not, I'm here, Draco. And I'm not going anywhere.'

Due to his new appointment as the Slytherin Quidditch Captain, Draco decided that he needed to brush up on his Quidditch skills and enlisted the help of Blaise and Theodore for help. He left the common room where Hermione was napping peacefully on the lounge.
