Framed for a crime he didn't commit. Sitting in an underwater cell with nothing to do; nowhere to go. Sonic knows exactly who is responsible for stealing that Chaos Emerald from the museum. But he has no evidence, no alibi to prove his innocence. How can he let people know he's on their side?

Some people believe Sonic is innocent. Others think he's a criminal. The security cameras caught the culprit in action and identified the convict as none other than Sonic the Hedgehog fleeing from the scene of the crime. People think, "How could he do such a thing like this?" Is this true? Is it really Sonic at all?

- S – p – e – c – i - a – l -

One word in caps, "SHADOW". A hedgehog is able to defeat a government robot with just one punch. This machine is later used to fight Sonic. But it was certainly no match for him. Sonic easily defeats the robot as if it was nothing. After the smoke clears away, something catches Sonic's eye, and what he sees shocks him even more than being called a fugitive.

The hedgehog behind the machine comes out and greets Sonic. He reveals himself as Shadow. Shadow the Hedgehog. Sonic tries to attack him, but Shadow vanishes. He reappears in a different spot. Sonic is quite surprised and angry to see someone who looks just like him. Now, he knows why the police are after him. He notices that Shadow's power and use of Chaos Control is quite impressive. But, Sonic wants to test Shadow's true speed. 

They race on the street. Sonic is astounded to see someone else who could keep up with him. But, he doesn't want to let his guard down. He knows he has to defeat Shadow and turn him in to the authorities. Sonic attempts to bring down Shadow himself. 

Instead, Shadow can see it coming. He gets the upper hand and lands some violent hits, making the hero fall. Shadow is very interested with this encounter of the Blue Blur, but he knew he couldn't stay long. He disappears just seconds before the police arrive at the scene. 

Sonic is once again in deep trouble. They capture Sonic, ready to lock him up. Has Sonic finally met his match?

From a distance, Shadow watches the police take Sonic away. He enjoyed this little encounter while it lasted. But, Shadow has a plan going on in his mind. He's doing all of this for her. No one knows what he's secretly scheming, and no one is going to stop him from changing his mind. Sonic may be the one thing that would get into Shadow's way. But, with Sonic being locked up, no one else can face this mysterious being. So, what is Shadow's true intention?

Prison Island. This is where it all began. Even with its top-notch security system and defenses, Dr. Eggman finds something very interesting about what this island was containing. With his extensive research and knowledge over his grandfather's past, he uncovers Project Shadow. Dr. Eggman and his two robots find the room that contained this particular project. He uses a Chaos Emerald to activate and open the capsule. A cloud of smoke obscures the entire room, making it barely visible to see. They all see a silhouette getting up and out of the capsule. They think it is Sonic, foiling the Doctor's plans yet again... But as soon as the smoke clears up, they see this hedgehog, Shadow. What has Dr. Eggman unleashed into this world?

Once again, Shadow returns back to Prison Island, the place where Sonic is now being locked up. Shadow is given the instruction to set the timer in a specific room in the prison. He sets it at 10 minutes and races out of the building.

Meanwhile, Sonic manages to break free from his cell. He remembers about his encounter with Shadow and wants to find him again. After hearing about Shadow being on the island, he begins his search.

It didn't take long for Sonic to find him. This fight is personal for Sonic. He lands one very effective punch on Shadow, knocking him down, but circumstances prevent Sonic from landing the final blow. He leaves Shadow behind. Shadow has a job to do, and he intends to finish its purpose. With time ticking down, he gets out a Chaos Emerald and activates Chaos Control. But, what is he going to do? What happens when the timer reaches 0:00?

- O – r – g – a – n – i – c -

Earth. This view from the Space Colony Ark is breathtaking. Shadow watches the planet while his past relays back in his mind.

. . .

Shadow's friend, Maria... They were running... from whom, from what?. . . Shadow finds himself inside a capsule. He tries to break free, but he couldn't... Maria has her hand on the lever. A shot has been fired, and Shadow witnesses Maria get a direct hit before he is sent out to escape the Ark.

. . .

Shadow couldn't forget that painful memory. His friend paid a price, and he intends to get revenge on the planet Maria once dearly cared about. No one is going to stop him from achieving his ultimate goal—to destroy the whole planet. He learns that Sonic is on board Space Colony Ark, trying to stop Eggman. He won't let that blue hedgehog get in the way of his plans. Shadow leaves to track down Sonic.

Shadow finds Sonic and tries to stop him. Sonic is aware of what Shadow is trying to do, but he won't allow him to do such a thing, so Sonic races out.

Shadow uses his Chaos spears to attack Sonic. Sonic manages to dodge each attack, and eventually uses a homing attack to bring Shadow down. Sonic wants to know what's going on.

Shadow smirks at him. Everything is according to plan. He tells Sonic that his time is running out. Then, he leaves. 

Sonic tries to stop him, but circumstances once again prevent him to do so. What exactly is stopping Sonic?

With everything falling into place, Shadow doesn't do anything. But, someone reminds him of Maria's true wish, "Please promise me... That you'll help people... and be... friends with them." With this in mind, Shadow knows what he has to do. He has to stop what he did before, and he needs to save the world. With the power of the Chaos Emeralds, he turns into Super Shadow, giving it all he's got to fulfill Maria's wish.
