Author's Note : I wanted to thank Dayday041003 for being the first person to vote on my story! It is my first story so it's so cool to know someone likes it. Thank you!
Race still hasn't talked to me yet this morning. He was already up before me, and he didn't bother to say a word to me before we left to go buy our papes. I wonder if I did something? Everything was fine until Jack interrupted us last night, but he's not ignoring Jack. Maybe I should just ask someone...
"Hey Mush!" I jogged ahead to Mush who was walking by himself. Mush was a tan guy, and he was VERY ripped. He lacked a shirt but had his pants and suspenders.
"Hey princess, what do ya need?" Mush always called me princess because he knew I hated it. He said it was because I was pretty, which I am ok with, but I feel like the term also makes me a damsel in distress. And I am no damsel.
"I'se need to talk to ya 'bout Racetrack." He looked at me with a big smirk and started laughing hysterically. I gave him a look of confusion and slapped him on the arm. "Hey! What's so funny? I'se need ya help!" He calmed down enough to be able to speak.
"I'se knew dis day would come. I'se got protection hidden unda me bed," he whispered with a wink. At first I was confused but then...
"Dio mio (oh my god), MUSH! YOU'SE ARE DEAD!"
Racetracks POV:
I watched with amusement as I hear Hero yell at Mush. I see her and Mush run past Skittery and I. She is screaming at him for something, but I'm not focused on that. I can't stop thinking about her. She's perfect. Absolutely perfect. She's not only gorgeous, but she's smart and tough. And Italian. I couldn't help but stare at her in admiration as she tackled Mush to the ground.
But now things are awkward. I was going to tell her how I felt, but Jack came up and I panicked. I haven't been able to talk to her since. I miss her, but i'm afraid it's going to be awkward.
Maybe i should just talk to her. Just act normal. I see her on the ground on top of Mush with his hand behind his back.
"THATS ME GOIL! GET 'EM HERO!" I yell. I see her look up at me and smile. A huge weight lifted off my soldiers and I smile back. I'm happy things feel a little bit more normal now. That was easier than I thought it would be. She gets off of Mush and whispers something to him before running over to me.
"Hey mio amore, what was you'se talkin' to Mush about?" While she was walking beside me, I slipped my hand into hers. I was afraid she'd pull away, but to my surprise she gripped my hand right back. I smiled happily.
"Nothin', don't you'se worry 'bout it."
"Oh, keepin' secrets from me now huh?"
"Oh neva."
Hero's POV:
I was happy Race was done acting weird around me. I can feel that things are changing between us, but I don't want that to ruin of friendship.
The newsies all walked through the gates to get our papes. I was walking along with Race until I heard a couple of newsies arguing about something. I mean, we're always arguing, but usually it's all playful. This sounded a little more serious. I decided to let go of Race's hand, which left a lonely feeling in my stomach, and walk over to some of the newsies. Jack came up behind me as we headed towards Kid Blink.
"Something da matta Blink?" I asked
"Yeah something's da matta! THEY JACKED UP THE PRICE! Ten cents a hundred!" What? No that couldn't be. I looked over at Jack to see he was as shocked as I was. "Ya know, its bad enough that we gotta EAT what we don't SELL. Now they jack up the price! Can you believe dat?!"
