Chapter 8 - Fate
DANIEL HUNT
Dan swerved left and right, not really caring that he was driving Monisha's car. He knew that the woman wouldn't say anything if he even crashed it into a ditch. She was sweet woman who kept to herself and had come to his help when he'd needed it just moments ago.
But he was sure that Lexi and the three other women would cut his head of if he so much as got a scratch on that beautiful piece of heaven called Aston Martin
Daniel had been so uneasy at his father's words that he had walked over to the bar and had gotten himself three fingers of scotch.
Taking a little time to himself, he sat there for half an hour at most. By the time he returned to the table, Kayla was gone.
He looked for her everywhere but she was nowhere to be found.
She'd left the party without so much a a word. Just like she'd left him back at Las Vegas.
When he had tried to leave, Calvin stopped him and had threatened him to leave Kayla alone. Dan almost laughed in his face. If he only knew the whole story...
Monisha was a darling as she'd stepped up from beside him and handed him the keys to her car.
He had raised an eyebrow at the way Calvin's arm wound around her waist but then he shrugged it off. It was none of his business. Right now he had to find Kayla. He couldn't let her be right now.
When she had left him in Vegas, he had resigned to the fact that she would never be his. But this time he was determined. He would chase her to the ends of the earth if that meant not losing her again.
He had went back to his place but she wasn't there. Neither was she back to her own apartment. He had an inkling that she may have been living with her fiance but he couldn't check that place out as he didn't know where the moron lived.
That left only one place.
He parked down the street, and then slowly made his way to the front entrance.
Kayla had bought it over two years ago and she had been working her ass off to piece together enough money to open a new restaurant.
She had scrounged up enough to start with the furnishing of the restaurant.
The front door was closed so Dan walked around to the back entrance.
The doors were open and he slipped in.
He knew the girl would shoot him if he didn't announcement himself so he yelled loudly, "Kay. Honey. Are you there?"
He didn't hear a single sound.
Making his way in the dark, he walked a bit further only to see a light coming from a small crack to his far right.
Making his over to the door he knocked slightly, before opening the door.
"Kayla?"
There she was, sitting on the countertop, chocolate smeared on her cheek, a spoon in her mouth as she looked up and gave Dan a wide-eyed look.
He leaned against the jamb and just looked at her with smile.
"What?" She said around a mouthful
"Nothing."
Shrugging her shoulders, she scooped some more of the chocolate goo and continued eating it.
"Are you okay?" he asked
She nodded but didn't meet his eyes.
He made his way over to her. Grabbing the bowl, he placed it aside and held her hands.
"Hey!" she exclaimed when he placed the bowl aside but didn't put up much of a protest.
"What is it?" he asked.
"It's nothing." she murmured.
Dan didn't know how to lift up her mood.
So he did the first thing that came to his mind.
Cupping her face with both his hands, he leaned down and kissed her.
He kissed her as if his life depended on it.
He pressed his lips to hers hoping against all hopes that she would return it back. Hoping against all hopes that she felt the same wamth that spread through his chest. Hoping against all hopes that she would know that they belonged together just like she did.
But she never did.
Daniel pulled back and looked at her. Her eyes were closed, her hands fisted on her lap.
She opened her eyes. Those lovely chocolate brown eyes. Loveliest brown eyes he'd ever seen.
She sighed and he just rested his forehead against hers.
"Sign the papers, Daniel."
"Six months aren't over yet." he mumbled but they both knew his resolve was breaking. That he was on he verge of giving it all up.
"Why are you doing this?" She murmured.
Because I loved you and maybe I still do.
It was on the tip of his tongue but he didn't say it out loud.
Instead he just let her go and hopped on the counter beside her.
She grabbed the bowl back and resumed eating it. As if the kiss never happened. As if it didn't affect her at all.
Maybe it didn't.
Maybe it was all in his head that they had chemistry.
He was just about to say that he was ready to sign the papers, when she rested her head on his shoulder.
"I'm glad you're here." Sh muttered softly.
Daniel didn't want to break the moment. So he just stayed quite and sat there with her, a comfortable silence between them.
They didn't speak much but he knew that even in that silence, him being there meant a lot to her.
Sure he was confused and he had his moments where he thought he should just give it up.
But then something always stops him. Something always pushes him to stay on his course.
Maybe this time, the fates were really on his side.
Or so he thought.
