Chapter 16 - Decisions, Decisions
KAYLA SUMMERS
Kayla saw the indecision warring in Daniel's eyes and she froze for a second.
What the hell was that about?
Had he had enough of her? Was he done with her already?
It took Maya two more days after her discharge to run and jump around the house as if she hadn't been bed ridden due to breathlessness.
But Dan hadn't let her leave the house just to be safe. He made her stay which had made her pout and sulk in her room.
As much as Dan was loving, he also knew when to drop the foot.
Kay had made milkshakes as promised and that had lifted her mood for a whole of two hours.
Then she had made her sit down and binge on Disney for the rest of the week.
Kay could now sing all of the songs from Moana as well as Frozen.
Her favorite was Shiny and the song just stuck in her head as if her brain had cleared up everything for the storage of that song.
She could almost imagine that glittery crab dancing around everytime that song played in her head.
For a week they had tried to come up with reasons for not taking a step outside the house when the little girl had stomped her foot and demanded that she go out.
Hence Dan had made plans and called for an Uber rather than taking his own car.
"No parking space. I don't wanna worry about getting my car towed." He had shrugged.
When they got down, Kay had never felt so breathless.
It wasn't like she hadn't been to a coast. Sure she had been. But this was different. Much much different.
There was a beach almost a mile or two away but Dan said that its too crowded. It always was.
So he had taken them to a place where they could sit and munch on roasted ear of corn with some spice and lemon.
Damn if her taste buds didn't just come awake with that.
When Maya suggested to walk to the far end, Kay volunteered because Dan had wanted to sit by himself.
"Daddy's tired." Maya said once they were out of his ear shot.
Kay didn't know what to say to that. Yes? No? What were you supposed to tell a kid.
"He worries about me." Maya said oblivious to Kay's reaction. "But he shouldn't. I'm a big girl now."
"You sure are honey."
They walked to the very end and Kay almost stopped. It was a little dangerous to walk on the stones that would get them near the water so she just stayed a little far.
But if she could go over and stand just a few metres away, she could almost imagine, sitting there and letting the world behind her disappear.
The water would crash on the stones and somehow it was soothing. The wind played with her hair, washing over her and she just wanted to stay there.
Stay there and just breath it in.
"I'm hungry." Maya's voice snapped her out of her reverie
The girl pulled her by the hand over to a woman who had a basket full of corns as she roated a few.
Buying one for Maya they walked back to where Dan was still sitting.
"Daddy!!" The girl ran over to him while she took her time to walk back.
The look on his face... It scared her.
He wouldn't have given up on her already. A month and a half. That was how long this had gone. Nothing could be decided in a month and a half's time.
She needed more time.
But looking back at the days they had spend together, she hated to admit that Dan had dealt his cards.
He had done everything and left himself bare. She had the power to make or break him.
He wasn't worried about Maya anymore, he was worried about her.
She had no reason to stay here. Dan wouldn't be coming back. He had said he had to get back to work first thing next Monday.
The vacations were over and that meant Kay could go back home any time soon.
But go back to where. Sure she had her restaurant but she didn't want to leave the father and the daughter.
Somehow she had fallen in love with the little kid. How could she not? The girl was simply adorable and damn smart.
But Dan? She wasn't sure what she felt for him.
At the same time she didn't know if she wanted him to give up on her.
Now that she thought back to the days they'd spent in India, not once had he kissed her.
She missed his kisses the most.
The night after the party, that was the last time he had kissed her.
Shit! She thought He gave up on me already
She should be rejoicing. This meant he would sign the papers and that meant she could marry Rory.
She'd be married to Rory the very next week from when Dan signed the papers.
Kayla - Rory
Kayla - Daniel
She felt like she was some character of a story and she would get a sign of who she should end up with.
But this wasn't it. In real life, shit never happened like that.
You can make anything happen Her father's words rang in her ears.
Sure she could make anything happen. But not when she wasn't herself sure on which guy to choose.
Danny. Rory. Danny. Rory. Dan -
"Let's go." Dan said. There was a resigned look on his face.
He was going to sign them tonight.
As much as she was unsure about the two, she was damn sure that Danny was done.
She panicked.
She didn't know why but she would feel it rising. She could feel it as her heart started to pound in her chest.
At that moment she knew that though she couldn't decide on one she couldn't let Danny go so easily. She had to give him a reason to fight for them because yes she wanted him to fight for them. She wanted him to fight for her and for that she had to take a step.
Decision made, she nodded at Danny and left for home with the two.
Just as she sat in the car, the damn song started playing in her head again.
Damn you, Tamatoa...
