Chapter 20 - Shocked

KAYLA SUMMERS

The whole plane ride to New York was pretty tense. Maya was fast asleep while Dan never left the kid alone even for a second. As far as she knew, the man didn't even take a washroom break. She was sure the guy would just fasten the oxygen mask the minute the kid would start wheezing.

But Maya slept soundly. She didn't wake up at all.

Though it was a private plane, Maya refused to sleep in the bedroom. The girl held her father's hand and Kay was sure it was more for his assurance. The girl was more mature for her age than anyone Kay had seen.

"You finally fell for him."

Kay had left the father and daughter alone and Lexi had retired to bed a long time ago. She didn't even hear Lexi come in, so engrossed she was watching Dan.

"I don't know."

"You've kept him in a nice neat box all these years. Now that he doesn't fit it, you're confused."

"I don't know how you understand people."

Lexi sat down in front of her. "I could say that I'm good at understanding people. But then been there, done that seems more reasonable. I tried to do the same. Put Logan in a box. You know what with his engagement announcement to the world. But that man is the only thing that I love the most now. Other than Channing that is."

"How's the kid?"

"Tessa's there at the hospital. She's in an incubator. Premature birth. She was only eight months along. Her lungs aren't open yet. She's hooked to wires and I couldn't see my kid like that. I had to..." Lexi trailed off, a tear escaping her eye.

In all her life, Kay had never seen Lexi cry. Not even once. To see Lexi so emotional was a shock. Sure, the woman's hormones were all over the place but then Lexi was also the woman that ran a fashion house and a family of Hunts with a tight fist.

To see Lexi break like that was awful.

"Is she okay?"

"Not breathing by herself but alive. She's alive. And she'll live. I don't care how much Logan goes off about how Hunts are strong. She's a part of me. And I know she'll fight through. We Becketts are tough chicks."

"This is why you came here."

"I wanted to focus on something else. And Dan has always been my concern not that you aren't. I know you can handle yourself. But him." Lexi pointed her thumb at him. "He's fucked up in the head and as much as I hate to say this, he's right. Sean distanced him and the others didn't hold him tight either. They just let him drift apart. Sure Sean is trying to mend it. But he's not trying hard enough."

Kayla couldn't help but envelope her friend in a tight hug.

The rest of the ride was pretty silent.

Kay wanted to talk to Dan but she let him fuss over his kid who whined every now and then for waking her up.

As soon as the pilot announced that they were landing, Lexi stood up,"I have a car waiting for us. We'll go home and see what to do."

"My home." He clarified.

"Yes Daniel, your home." She sighed.

The car ride was much more awkward than the flight. Too much of silence.

Neither Lexi nor Daniel opened their mouth. Maya had stuck her face to the window. She was looking out at the world with such wonder that Kay couldn't help but smile at the awe in the kids eyes.

The moment they stepped out of the car, Kay felt dread in the pit of her stomach.

Why would that be was beyond her wonder, but something was going to happen. Her father had taught her to trust her guts. To trust her intuitions. And the alarm was blaring on in her head so loud that she couldn't even focus on anything else.

As Dan grabbed his small backpack that had Maya's stuff in it, Kay kept an eye on Maya who spun round and round.

The four of them made their way to the basement lift.

Something was bothering her but she didn't know what it was.

"Are you okay?"

Kay stopped and looked around the basement parking lot where Lexi's driver had parked her car.

"Something is not right. I don't know what. But..." Kayla frowned at a familiar car.

A black car was parked few cars down Lexi's. It was familiar but why she didn't know.

Shaking her nerves she made her way to the elevator where Dan stood holding Maya's hand.

"Are you okay?" Dan asked.

She just smiled but she just couldn't point as to what was that thing making her uncomfortable.

Making their way to the top floor, Daniel walked out, Kay and Lexi hot on his heels.

The moment Dan stuck his key in the lock, the memory struck her and Kay's eyes widened.

"Daniel, don't." She yelled just as he opened the door.

"What?" He asked with a scowl

"What the fuck is going on?"

Kayla closed her eyes. As she heard the familiar grumble.

How could she have forgotten the car? It was Logan's very first car given by George as a graduation gift to him.

Dan froze as he heard Logan's voice.

Kay sent an accusing stare to Lexi who herself looked shocked to see her husband there.

The anger in Logan's eyes was something Kay had never seen.

"Fuck.". Lexi whispered and ran in.

"Fuck it is." Dan agreed.

Now that Logan was here, Dan wouldn't be able to find a way to run away and hide Maya.

She couldn't help but wonder if he did run back to his home, would he take Kay with him
