SHAUN’S POV

I walked through the school gates the following morning wearing my baggy uniform with my backpack slumped on my left shoulder. I was freaking out. Bradie and Andy weren’t on the train this morning. Andy called me last night and said he won’t come because he decided after year ten he didn’t want to do eleven and twelve. I sent them both texts, but they hadn’t replied. I can’t go to school alone. I looked like a douche with no friends on the train earlier.

I headed towards the music rooms. We always hung outside there the past three years. I walked through all the kids catching up with their friends boasting about who got shit-faced more times over the holidays. I got a rude comment from some year seven about my hair. I knew I shouldn’t have spiked it up today. Finally I reached the performing arts area and sure enough there was Bradie and Andy with a few other guys. I was stoked to see people I can actually talk to without having a panic attack. Andy looked up and saw me heading in their direction.

“The fuck did you do to your hair?” he questioned touching it as I reached them.

“Problem with it?” I asked batting his hand away.

“Nope,” he replied and added, “you’re just gonna get a lot of gay jokes.”

I shook my head. I didn’t care about people joking about my hair.

“Did you guys get my texts I sent you?” I questioned curious as to why they didn’t reply.

Andy looked away.

“I did, I just have no credit.” Bradie answered holding up his phone, “and Andy’s mum took his phone off of him.”

“Shut up!” Andy shoved Bradie in the shoulder.

“Why?” I laughed, not many nearly seventeen year olds get stuff like phones taken off of them.

“Because he wouldn’t stop refusing to go to school,” Bradie answered for him and Andy gave him a death glare.

“Yeah, why are you here?” I asked, “you said you weren’t gonna do year eleven.”

“His mum forced him,” Bradie answered again.

“Geez Bradie, learn to shut up for once,” Andy said angrily.

“Sorry, he asked,” Bradie laughed.

“Mum said unless I get a full-time job, I have to stay at school,” Andy explained.

“Seems fair, but why weren’t you guys on the train this morning?” I asked.

“I got my P’s a week ago, I’m taking any chance I can to drive,” Andy replied, he’s been treating himself like a god since he passed the test.

“He nearly killed us,” Bradie said looking at Andy, “and he got a ticket for reckless driving.”

“That cop couldn’t see past his walking frame!” Andy defended himself.

“He was like in his thirties and you ran through a red light!” Bradie retaliated and looked at me, “so how was seeing your dad last night?”

My heart sank. I was hoping no one would bring this up.

“Uh, he didn’t show up,” I answered looking at the ground.

“Let me guess ‘too busy’ again?” Andy quoted.

“Yeah, I don’t care though,” I lied and needed to change the subject, “so did you get our timetables?”

“Yeah,” Bradie responded pulling the pieces of paper out of his pocket and handing me mine.

I skimmed over mine and Bradie’s, I wasn’t real happy.

“We’re only in music and art together,” I said pretty upset.

“Oh well, maybe you two can finally get girlfriends then,” Andy piped in, “everyone is starting to think you’re a gay couple.”

“They are not!” Bradie and I said in defence.

“Yeah, you’re right,” Andy started, “they’re not starting to think that…they’ve thought that since year seven.”

Bradie and I death glared him and as the bell rang Andy laughed all the way to his first class.

I sighed and prepared myself for a full day of classes with complete strangers. Multiple panic attacks, here I come…
