SHAUN’S POV
Thank fuck it’s Thursday and also thank fuck it’s after lunch. The rest of the day, music with Bradie. We walked into the classroom and I was relieved that those three douchebags weren’t in this class. I don’t want Bradie dragged into the shit I’m going through. They were getting worse as the week dragged on. I still hadn’t said a word to them and they’d just push me around like I’m an annoying fly. I’m pretty sure I have bruised ribs from when one of them shoved me into the wall earlier today.
We both sat down at the back of the classroom pretending like we didn’t exist. This probably does look gay like Andy said…
“Me and Andy have been working on the song you wrote,” Bradie started, “it’s really good.”
“Sweet,” I looked down at my hand, “I’ll work on some chords when this gets better.”
“I still don’t understand how you can sprain your wrist from just falling over…” he doubted.
“I just…I landed on it wrong,” I lied.
“Sounds more like you would’ve broken it if that happened…” he said looking at it.
“Yeah, well, it doesn’t matter,” I said wanting to get off topic.
“So, the song, what’s it about?” he questioned.
Geez, can this guy stop asking questions like this. Can’t anything be private?
“I just wrote it,” I answered avoiding eye contact, “it has no meaning.”
“Every song has meaning,” he laughed.
“This one doesn’t, okay,” I responded getting pissed off with all the questions.
He looked at me like he knew I was hiding something. He’s always been able to do that with me.
“You can tell me, I won’t tell Andy,” he continued to pressure me.
I looked at him and knew he wouldn’t call me a pussy for it, unlike Andy.
“…like if it’s a guy or something…” he added, what the actual fuck?
“What?!” I shouted and other kids turned around and stared, “I’m not gay!”
“I just thought because you haven’t had a girlfriend before…” he went on.
“Either have you,” I cut him off.
“I guess you got me there,” he laughed, “sorry, you don’t have to tell me.”
“Thank you,” I replied relieved that he’d stopped.
“Music isn’t gonna be fun for you today,” he looked down at my bandaged wrist, “I don’t know why you were so excited for it.”
“My other classes are full of jerks, that’s why,” I responded gently touching my pained ribs.
“Jerks like Andy?” he winked.
He had no idea what was happening to me. I’m glad I could tell he wasn’t going through the same thing in his classes.
“Something like that,” I answered.
“That’s why you haven’t spiked your hair up the past few days, ‘because it’s gay’,” he mocked Andy.
“Exactly right, the year sevens are even cooler than me,” I responded.
“Correction, they think they are,” Bradie replied, “besides we’re cooler than everyone, we’re gonna be in a famous band eventually and they’ll all be buying tickets to see us ‘fags’.”
“We can continue to dream Bradie,” I smiled.
Geez, I wish that would happen. I’d love to rub my success in those douches faces. That’ll never happen though. So many people are in bands that never make it.
“Dream? I don’t dream about the band, I dream about girls, jesus christ Shaun, I’m not gay,” he winked.
I laughed; he was seriously the coolest dude ever. Whenever we’re alone he’ll always make jokes like this. If we’re with Andy he won’t even try because he’ll just shut him down, but that’s what brothers are for. I don’t care about what other people think of Bradie. He’s my best friend and I love him regardless of what people say.
