I’m seventeen years old and my name is Alixandra Clare. I live in Mt Kyra, the town in Australia where spies live. By the age of eighteen we have to choose whether we want to become part of the Mt Kyra undercover spy agency or go onto university and have normal career. I turn eighteen on the 23rd of December, which is a month and a half away, so I don’t have much more time left to decide. I finished school a while ago now, and I finished the High School Certificate a week ago. Now I am just waiting on my results that don’t come out until the beginning of December. I have 4 months holiday until I start university or a two year training course to become a spy.
My parents were spies, but being one can be more trouble than it’s worth. My three older siblings decided against being one after the tragic death of our parents.
Riley, my younger brother, had just turned one and my parents decided we were responsible enough to be left alone for a week, while they went on their first mission in seventeen years. They had a target to capture; this man had been stealing small amounts of money from many different banks, in the hope that no one would notice. His plan was working, banks hadn’t noticed, police hadn’t noticed and citizens hadn’t noticed, until our spy agency came across it. He had been watched for three weeks and was located in Western Australia. Mt Kyra is on the outskirts of New South Wales, therefore our parents had to catch an airplane to get there. As soon as they stepped off the plane, they were both shot straight through the head by their target. This was by far, very unexpected and just goes to show how dangerous becoming a spy can be. The man was captured very soon after and put to death by the agency for stealing and murder.
Having all this in mind, I went to the Mt Kyra library on Tuesday morning find out more about my parent’s lives as spies. I searched through books and across all search engines on the internet, into the late hours of the afternoon. I looked down at my watch while I waited for the final page of my search on Yahoo to load. 8:46pm, great, I had spent my whole day searching for something that doesn’t exist, all I had found was information I already knew about my parents. I glanced up at the computer screen as my mouse was hovering over the ‘X’ button, when something caught my eye. ‘The Clare’s accept money from a dangerous dealer’, I clicked on the website before I had time to react to what I saw.
My heart was beating furiously in my chest, and I was almost jumping out of my chair in excitement. I looked down at the article and read through it.
‘The Clare’s accept money from a dangerous dealer’
By Michel Fisher
Martha Clare, 26 and Theodore Clare, 28 were in need of some money to look after their two year old twins (Grace and Sean) and their soon to come newborn. So what did they do? They went to the most a man who will give you anything you want, but he never has an easy price. Most people seek him out when they are in time of real need. This man is Daniel Ross; our sources tell us that Mrs. Clare requested $20, 000 from Ross and promise to give him whatever he wanted in return so long as she could keep her family safe. However we were unable to find out what was requested from Daniel Ross in return. The Clare family is stepping in dangerous waters, but these people would go to the end of the earth and beyond to keep their family safe. With their new loan of money the family will be able to keep stable for many years to come, but the question is:
What did Daniel Ross get of this deal?
What! My mind was screaming out in frustration. How did they repay the man? I scrolled down and back up, searching for more or a link to click on that would give me the answer, but there was nothing. I sat there staring at the screen for what felt like 5 hours, but was actually less than 10 minutes. I glanced down at my watch again, 8:59pm. Fantastic, I told Grace I’d be back by 9! I quickly shut down the computer, and grabbed my bag heading out the door. I realized I had almost been locked into the library, oh yeah they close at 9, whoops.
The night was really cold; the fresh air stung my skin. I jumped around kind of like a crazy chicken trying to find my hoodie, in my bag. I ripped it out of my bag and threw it over my body. It was about a fifteen minute walk to my house from the library; I hugged myself and pushed forwards. I hadn’t walked home this late very many times, the streets lights dimly lit the pathway, but I was still surrounded by darkness. I was a bit scared, the silence, the darkness, the emptiness; they were all factors of my fear. I decided I’d call someone, so I grabbed my phone out of my pocket, illuminating the space around me. That’s when I first noticed it. There was a hooded figure, his shadow hovering on my heels and soft steps on the ground, that’s when I first noticed I was being followed.
