Chapter Two

Fear was coursing through my veins, worry was pumping out of my heart and the only word my brain could form was ‘fuck’ and it repeated over and over in my mind as I kept stumbling along the footpath. Then instinctively I ran, I ran for my life, ran for everything I lived for, I ran and I ran. I could hear his footsteps pounding behind me; one hesitation was all it took. I came to the intersection of the road and the alleyway. The road was a longer route to my house, but would be safer whereas the alleyway would be a shortcut but it would give him more of chance to corner me. That one hesitation, the one decision I took too long to decide on was all it took

I was pushed into a wall; the impact squeezed the air out from my lungs. I was frozen in shock, when he came up in front of me and shoved me into the wall. He shook off his hood, revealing his face. His body was covered in black clothing including a black beanie which sat over his mop of dark hair. He had a bush of a moustache sitting under his abnormally large nose, his thick eyebrows were furrowed into his fore head and he was licking is large lips in anticipation.

“Get off me you creep” I screeched, but my voice was dry and cracked, I doubt the sound carried beyond his ears. “Martha Clare? What a long time it’s been, might I just say you haven’t changed a bit! Well besides this hair, I liked it so much better blond” he snarled, Martha? That was my mum’s name. Mum always said I looked exactly like her when she was my age except with darker hair. This guy wasn’t after me; he was looking for my mum, but why? “M-M, I’m n-not, who are you?” I choked out. He grabbed my hair, forcing my head backwards. “Who am I!?  Martha, don’t play dumb with me! You know very well who I am and what you owe me!” he barked, I could feel his hot breath on my face. His closeness was making me incredibly uncomfortable, what could this guy be talking about? Then it dawned on me, but it couldn’t be, no, this guy couldn’t be.

“I don’t-” I choked, but I got cut off, “it’s been 15 years Martha, but I still have use for you” he grinned evilly at me. I was so scared of what this guy might do with me. With everything I had inside me, I built up my courage, “D-David? David-David R-Ross?” tumbled out of my mouth. “Ahh the realized” he sniffed at my face, as if breathing me in. At this point I remember I was still clutching my phone in my hand, I made a quick decision then. My phone is a pretty hard object and with that I raised my hand towards the side of his head.

His hand flew up into the air and he grabbed my wrist, he squeezed my wrist so hard it made me drop my phone. “Nice try” he chuckled, grabbing a card out of his pocket and said “Here take this, it’s got my address on it, come to me by the end of this month or I will find everyone you know and love, and kill them slowly and painfully” he stretched out the last part and slipped the card into the breast pocket of my hoodie. “I made you a deal Martha, I gave you twenty thousand dollars in exchange for-” I cut him off by giving him a good old knee in a place where the sun don’t shine. And a hard hit at that. He collapsed in a heap on the ground; I kicked my phone from underneath his arm. I ran to my phone and pocketed it, I took once last look at David Ross, “inexchangefor yo han dimarriage” he grumbled out. I didn’t quite process what he just said, but I could see he was attempting to get up again. I ran down the alleyway and sprinted as fast as I could.

I sighed in relief when I saw my house, I stopped outside. I had to catch my breath and make sure I looked like nothing had happened. I raked my fingers through my hair and patted down my clothes. I glanced down at my watch, 9:24pm, great; Grace is going to kill me.

“I’m sorry” I exclaimed closing the front door behind me. A shoe hit my shoulder with a thud; I looked over to see Sam untying his other shoe. He has probably just come back from a late night run; Sam always likes to stay fit. He is twenty years old and is a stocky build, he got my mum’s short gene but he’s still got muscles from all the sport he does. He has golden blond shaggy hair, a little darker then pale skin and green eyes. “Idiot” he mumbled, this was his way of getting me in trouble for coming home late. “Alixandra” Sean said walking over to me, he effulged me in a hug, my big brother is like a friendly giant. Sean is one of the twins, twenty three years old; he is tall and has a mop of dark hair with his tanned skin that he got from my dad and brown eyes.  “Gracie is going to kill you” he whispered in my ear, “I know” I sighed resting in his arms. I was happy to be home again and feeling safe in the arms of my family.

“Ali” Grace screeched running over to me, “I was so worried”. Grace looked just like Sean except a female; she had tan skin and dark hair that fell just below her shoulders. She was short, an average weight and had brown eyes. I forced myself to chuckle slightly; “I’m fine, and I just got caught up at the library searching through the books” I lied. I couldn’t tell my family about my discoveries tonight, I had to figure out what it all meant first and then decide whether it’s even worth tell them. She let go of my and placed her hand on my shoulders, “did you find anything about them?” she questioned me. I didn’t reply. “Ali? Did you find anything about our parents?” I bit my lip and shook my head. “Only stuff we already know” I told her. “Aw, its okay you can still do some other research about spies” she said sounding doubtful.

“C’mon Ali, just give it up, there’s no point in becoming a spy except to get your bloody head blown off” Sam said through his clenched teeth. “Sam!” we all yelled at him, “don’t talk about our parents like that” came from Grace; “They were still great spies” Sean spoke. Sam just shook his head, picked up his shoes and headed across the hall towards his room. “You’re an idiot, Samantha” I yelled at him, I called him Samantha when I was mad at him so that I could annoy him. “Shhhh you’ll wake up Riley” Grace whispered, “is he asleep?” I asked them. “Yep, in your bed” Sean replied. “Again? Fantastic!” I remarked walking up the thin set of stairs to Grace, Riley and my room. I threw my bag into the corner of the room and crept into the bathroom. I brushed my teeth and splashed some water on my face to refresh myself. I haven’t been bothered to change into pyjamas for months now so I just sleep in my clothes. I plopped down on my bed next to Riley. He is my younger brother who is only seven years old. Riley had the same honey brown coloured hair as me, but he has big green eyes and lighter skin. I hugged my little brother close to me; I loved my family more than anything or anyone else in the world.

At last I could think about what had happened when I was walking home tonight. I can’t believe I had met David Ross, he told me I would have to go to him before the end of the month or he would kill my family. I couldn’t let him do that; I had to stop him, but how? He thought I was my mum, who is dead. But if David Ross is as dangerous as he seems then he will still want payment. He said something as I ran off, but I couldn’t make out what it was. Inex hanor your hand inarraige? Inexchan tour yohan imp arrage? What did he say? I asked myself again and again, as I drifted off to sleep, all I could think was; I have to remember.
