Chapter two:

The Conversation

“Hi, Jack. Why are you here?” questions Zach.

“Why do you ask?” asks Jack.

“Well, when you’re an ex-dealer and a cop goes to your house, well… you do get a little suspicious, you know?” he comments.

“Well, you are a pastor now.”

“True… Well, you can come explain why you’re here over a cup of coffee.”

“Not a beer?”

“Nice try.”

“Hey, I had to know for sure, eh?” chuckles Jack, as he is guided to the living room. Jack takes his seat and waits for Zach to come back with the coffee. He gazes at the room around him with eager eyes. His eyes spot a picture of Zach with his wife and kids. They are in a snowy place, have the right gear on for the cold weather, and are all smiling.

“I’m back! Here you go,” says Zach as he sets the coffee mugs on the table.

“Thanks… Excuse me, is that your family?”

“Yes, yes. They…uh…died two years ago. Car crash.”

“Oh…oh I’m so sorry, man.” Jack tries to change the subject, since he knows how hard it is for people to talk about something like that. “So…why I wanted to see you. Do…do demons exist?”

“Yeah, yeah.”

“H-how can you be so sure?”

“Well, for one thing, I’ve read the Bible. Other than that, I’ve seen a few before.”

“Really… That’s good. It means I’m not crazy! What did they look like?”

“Like death itself. Have you seen one?”

“I-I think so. What happened is I was in the middle of a warzone and a guy was about to shoot me with a RPG-7 and I shot the rocket with my gun and it exploded and I saw a demon in the fire. Well…that’s it in a nutshell.”

“Ah, man… I think that guy had a demon in him. Were those guys part of the occult?”

“Yeah… As a matter of fact…they were.”

“Well, that makes sense, because these people have all kinds of satanic practices. They literally let themselves get possessed.”

“Well, that’s just stupid! Uh-oh. I’m late for my appointment.” Says Jack, looking at his watch. “Well, great seeing you again, buddy.”

Jack pats Zach on the shoulder and Zach offers to show him the way out. As soon as Jack is on the front porch, Zach says one last thing, “Be careful, Jack. There’s a storm coming.”
