Chapter 11:
The Preparation
Jack moves over to the small table within the space craft, picks up his pistol and loads it. He quickly tests the gun’s weight by flicking it into the air and aiming.
“Yeah,” he mutters, “that should be a decent amount of accuracy.”
He places the gun on the table again and slowly starts to leave the room. Dave comes walking through the hallway. He is wearing a leather jacket, carrying two FALs, wearing black jeans and walking in Comrade All-stars. His jacket is unzipped, revealing his grey Snoopy t-shirt. He marches over to Jack, his hands in his pockets. He tips his dark shades down, so that he can see Jack properly.
“Nice shirt,” comments Jack.
“Look,” starts Dave, “you won’t be able to take care of Abaddon without the proper equipment”
“You made me a suit?”
“Well, it’s the original slayer’s suit, but it’s been modified.”
“I’m not a slayer, yet, Dave.”
“Not yet, but you will be.”
Jack leans against the wall and says absolutely nothing, not even looking in Dave’s direction. He puts his hand on his mouth to block his yawning, a weary, tired expression on his face. He had been tired ever since all the commotion had started and he doesn’t know why. It has been hard for him to sleep for the past few days, too. He looks at Dave, again, hesitating to answer him, so he simply signals for him to lead the way.
Dave takes Jack through the corridor, into his room. Nancy is sitting there, on Jack’s bed, waiting for them, her legs crossed. As she sees them approaching, she immediately takes a small briefcase over to Jack. She is also wearing a leather jacket and jeans. She is also wearing a turtleneck. She hands over the briefcase to him, noticing that he isn’t in the mood for talking at all. They leave the room, allowing him to change in private. He opens the briefcase.
“Not bad,” he smirks, “not bad at all.”
He soon leaves the room, wearing a leather coat that is buttoned to the waist, thick leathery boots, elbow guards, other additional armour and a Stetson hat. There are many places in his suit in which he can secretly sheathe weapons. He approaches his allies as they speak to each other of their tactical plan.
“Is Max ready, yet?” he questions.
“Almost, he just needs to get the right weapons and we’ll be off,” replies Nancy. “By the by, Dave and I have come to the conclusion that we might be able to find the rest of Erin’s journal’s. Have you finished the latest one?”
“Yeah. I re-read it a couple of times, yesterday, actually. Apollyon seems like a really nice guy,” he jokes.
They wait for Max to ready his troops, while playing a game of Uno on the table. Jack wins every round. He had loved this game as a kid. He doesn’t get why he isn’t allowed to enjoy himself a little. Eventually, he lets Nancy win a round and when Dave gets frustrated, he lets him win, too.
Jack had always had a way of guessing people’s moves, something that his dad had taught him to do when he was young. He always used played card games with his dad. His father would always let him win.
His father watches him play cards with his little sister, Emma. The two of them always get along pretty well, which is very unusual for siblings. They are playing “Snap” and enjoying it a lot. His father turns his attention back to the road, still gently stroking his wife’s delicate hair. She is sitting in the seat next to his. They are travelling to Michigan for the weekend to spend time as a family.
