Chapter 6

The Generation

Jack walks over to the small table in the room in the centre of the cave. He sees Dave walking over to the room in a Hello Kitty robe, his head shaved clean on both sides.

“This is not something you should see at 6:30 in the morning,” mutters Jack as he approaches the cupboard right next to the table and takes out a bowl and a box of cereal. He lets Dave sit on “his” chair and takes one on his right side.

As he pours Frosties and milk into his bowl, he notices a familiar face passing through the corridor. “Morning, boys,” says Nancy, “shall we get started, then?”

The three of them of them head down to the training centre. Dave takes off his robe, revealing that he is already fully dressed for the occasion. He starts to practices using his throwing knives. Nancy walks over to Jack.

“Jack?” asks Nancy.

“Yeah, what is it, Nancy” he replies.

“We heard you were a great shot, and that you were fantastic at stealth,” she continues, “but what would you do if you were unarmed and had no place to hide in order of waiting to attack?”

“I’d have to run,” answers Jack.

“Exactly!” she exclaims. “You’d have to run. When it comes to guns, you can kill the crap out of everybody, but when it comes to open hand-to-hand combat…well, you get the picture.”

“Yeah…?”

“You need training. You haven’t learnt any form of fighting yet. You need something to fall back onto.”

“So what you’re saying is that I need to learn to kick ass.”

“That is about the size of it, yes.”

“Where do you want us to start?”

“How about kick-boxing?”

“Sure. That works for me.”

They head over to the punch bag in the middle of the training centre.

“I think you’ll probably know how to punch, so I do not have to teach you how to do that. Just try to hit the punch bag with flat fists. Don’t pull any of your punches,” she advises.

“Don’t you worry,” he says, “I won’t.” He starts to punch, remembering all that had happened to him in the previous days. He just wants to wake up from this terrible nightmare. He doesn’t want any of this. He doesn’t want it.

The punch bag flies across the room, and he drops down on his knees. He thinks of his parents again and how much they meant to him. Once he had gotten out of the car, he was so terrified, but at the same time, peaceful. He didn’t care about anything else. He just watched the water dance in the moonlight. All of the stars seemed to be out. It was so beautiful. It was so beautiful. He didn’t care about anything else.

“Jack! Are you okay?! You fell asleep on the floor!” shouts Nancy.

“D-did I?” asks Jack, wearily.

Dave comes storming through. “What happened? Is somebody hurt?” he asks.

“No…I…I’m okay,” replies Jack.

“Oh, it’s just you,” he says, “never mind.”

Jack stares at him in disbelief, until he is back at the practice range.

“Jack?” asks Nancy.

“Hmph, yeah?” he answers back.

“Go get the punch bag,” she says.

Jack returns to his room later to end the day. Nancy visits him right before he gets into his bed.

“Jack?” she asks.

“Hey…” he mutters, under his breath.

“I…I think I should tell you who we are.”

“Well it’s about time.”

They sit on the bed next to each other. Nancy is quiet tonight, which is very unusual for her.

“It was a long time ago,” she starts, “when a man named Abraham Van Helsing discovered what the demons were trying to do, that he began the generation of slayers. His first ‘student’ was a man known only as Slay. Slay knew how to kill them. He could see the spiritual world. He advised his fellow students not to use the Third Eye to see into the spiritual world since it is just plain stupid. The Third Eye is…satanic.

“Unfortunately, one of the students had the nerve to do it anyway. He went mad. Killed all of the other students. Slay was forced to end his life, because he was about to destroy the entire kingdom. All of the students were dead besides Slay. He had a child later and one of his descendants, Erin, restarted this…organisation of ours.”

“So, you guys are what…slayers?” he asks.

“Yes. Demon slayers,” she says as she turns off the light and leaves his room.

Jack remembers what she had told him…and thinks.
