Chapter 7
The Invasion
Jack wakes up in the middle of the night. The base is pitch black. He is unable to see the largest sign of life. For some reason, he is thirsty. He wearily tries to walk over to the bar and takes out a bottle of water and a glass. He gets onto one of the stools and pours his drink.
He senses something odd moving in the darkness…moving towards him. He looks back slightly and waits to strike. He puts his hand on a bottle of whiskey and holds it tightly, praying for the best to happen. Something touches him on the left shoulder and he strikes. He then kicks the unknown creature in the face. He knows he can win this one.
“Ow,” shrieks Big Dave, “what the hell, Jack?!!”
“What? Dave, is that you?” asks Jack.
“The hell it is!”
“Look, I’m sorry, but why are you here?”
“I got thirsty. You?”
“The same here.”
“You know how expensive that whiskey was, right?”
“Sorry. Want some water?”
“Sure, as long as you don’t hit me with your glass, too.”
Jack chuckles as he pours water into both of their glasses. He hands over Dave’s glass to him and picks up his own, but right as he puts the glass to his lips, black liquid drips into it. He looks up and taps on Dave’s shoulder. He points to the ceiling and Dave’s eyes widen. Dave secretly puts a 45 Defender into Jack’s hand while it is still behind his back and Jack grasps it tightly.
He waits for the creature to move to a better position. It has grey skin, elf ears and is extremely scrawny. Suddenly, Jack takes out his gun and shoots it. It falls directly onto the table and destroys most of the glasses and bottles on it. It tries to get up, but there are pieces of glass sticking through it. Jack puts the gun to the demon’s head and pulls the trigger. He shoots the creatures head clean off. Its black blood spatters all over the bar.
“C’mon,” says Jack, “We’ve got to go.”
Dave takes off his Disney princesses robe, already geared up. He takes out two sharp, shiny katanas and starts to follow Jack. The two men are stormed by fifteen other demons. They run down the long hall, followed by the creatures. Jack keeps slicing them if they come too close. They are both thinking the same thought: they have to reach Nancy’s room. She has a larger arsenal of weapons.
“You thinking what I’m thinking?” asks Jack.
“The hell I am!” exclaims Big Dave. “We need to reach Nancy’s room. She gets really irritated when you wake her up this early! She’ll be able to hoard off the demons on her own.”
Jack rolls his eyes as they continue to run. As soon as they reach Nancy’s room they try to open the door. Unfortunately, the wooden door seems to be locked from the inside and the room is soundproof.
“Don’t you guys have an alarm or something?” demands Jack.
“We already went past it!” bellows Dave.
Jack takes out a small paperclip out of his right pocket. He tries to pick the lock with it, unproductively.
“Well, if that didn’t work I wonder what we should do?” queries Jack.
Dave hurriedly thrusts Jack aside and breaks the door down by kicking it.
“”Um, okay,” utters Jack, incredulous.
The two of them hurry over to Nancy’s bed and immediately try to wake her up.
“You guys?” she mutters. “What time is it?”
“Nancy, you’ve got to get up,” says Dave, “we’re being attacked!”
“What?! How’d they find this place?” she cries.
“Look, we need a larger arsenal of weapons! The demons are hot on—”
Suddenly, hoards of demons enter the room. They are everywhere: the floor, the ceiling and the walls and they are surrounding them.
“Jack?” requests Nancy.
“Yeah?” he retorts.
“Find the general and slit his throat,” she orders.
“Not a problem, boss,” he articulates.
Jack shoots as many of them as possible, clearing a path for himself. Their general is the one giving them orders. He probably isn’t fighting in this battle, but he is giving them a strategy from a distance. Not a very long distance, though.
Where could he be? Jack thinks, In one of the rooms… Of course! My room is almost impossible to get into. Even more so than Nancy’s or Dave’s!
Jack hurries over to his own room. He takes out his paper clip and kneels next to the door of his room. He tries to pick the lock again. Nuts. He still can’t do it. He’ll have to get in using the vents. He goes to the public bathroom, stands on the desk and enters the vent, hoping he won’t get stuck.
As soon as he has finished navigating his way through the vents, he drops down into his room. He is surprised to find no one…or nothing there. He continues to search the room, to see if he can find any clues on the whereabouts of the general.
What he doesn’t notice is that a creature is stalking him in the shadows. It crawls onto the ceiling and Jack suddenly looks back, but finds nothing there. What does catch his eye, though, is that there is black goo all over the floor. He goes over to it to investigate it. Suddenly, the demon leaps and Jack suddenly turns around and shoots it directly in the stomach. The demon falls onto the ground and black blood oozes all over the floor,
Jack notices its distinct features on the creature and realizes that it is the demon that had interrogated him. Now it is his turn to interrogate it. He walks over to it as it wails in pain and kneels next to it.
“Why did you come here?” he interrogates. “Why?!!”
“You d-don’t know, yet?” laughs the creature, hideously. “After all this time you still don’t know?!”
“Don’t play games with me, demon!!!” shrieks Jack. He takes out a bullet and scrapes the point of it against his gun.
“Well, at least you know what I am. You still don’t know about that stupid piece of scripture, do you?”
“What? What do you mean?”
“Think about it. You are able to see the spiritual world without the Third Eye. A gift. And a whole lot of rubbish.”
“You think so? It did help me kill you.”
“Kill me? I’m still—”
As the demon continues to speak, Jack cuts its throat with his last bullet that he had sharpened, and it breathes out its last few words, “You will never survive the apocalypse to come.”
Its eyes start to close slowly and it loses the little colour it has left. Its wings are completely evaporated and worms start devouring it from the inside-out. It is soon gone completely.
“The apocalypse to come,” Jack slurs under his breath.
