Chapter 15 - Hello Again
I've probably had the best sleep I've ever had, I thought the following morning. I quickly dressed into something more appropriate, and found the Doctor inside the kitchen, preparing breakfast and still wearing his blue suit and beige trench coat. We chatted a while, the topic of the conversation ranging from eggs to the process of star formation. Inevitably, we landed upon the topic of Frysta and his kingdom, and ended up agreeing to help him.
Paradoxically, it was a pretty nice day. We were surrounded by sunlight, and weren't met with much of a breeze . As the Doctor and I found our way back to the castle, we met a small army that was huddled outside the city's walls. They weren't ordinary looking soldiers. They were like Rodfan, one of the mystical guardians inside the castle. They looked massive, with weapons taller than I was in their hands. Frysta was standing in front of them all, obviously wearing nothing but a robe and a crown, no weapons, no armor.
"Doctor! Karliah!" he welcomed, smiling slyly at us. I didn't find him beautiful anymore.
"Why aren't you dressed for battle?" I questioned, not bothering to give him a proper greeting.
"My dear, I'm not going into battle! I'm just a strategist."
"What?" I said, clearly letting the irritation spill out. "That's ridiculous. That's—that's cowardice!"
His disposition turned, as he gave me a deadly stare, and it took me back in surprise,"Soldiers win battles," he said softly. "Strategists win wars." He immediately turned back to his soldiers,"Alright everyone! The time has come. We've been preparing for this for quite some time now. The battle of life is, in most cases, fought uphill; and to win it without a struggle is perhaps to win it without honor. If there is no difficulties there will be no success; if there is nothing to struggle for, there would be nothing to be achieved. Let's carry the battle to them. Don't make them bring it to us! Put them on the defensive, and don't apologize for anything."
All of the same-looking soldiers stomp one foot, as a tribute of recognition.
I look at the Doctor worriedly,"Maybe we should just stay here..."
He scoffed,"And miss out on all the fun? I don't think so."
So, we marched in front of the group of soldiers with Frysta. Frysta attempted to be cheery and flirtatious, but it immediately set off my nerves.
We arrive at the sea-shore, and see several glorious ships all across the way. Surprisingly, they weren't made of ice... because the water is hot. We pilled up onto the ships, and launched off. The Doctor and I leaned against the railing, letting the cool breeze whip through our hair. Something strange was going on. I felt it getting warmer... And warmer... and warmer, until sweat covered my brow. I could see the sky getting a smokey black and orange color, as if it were already turning night time. The water was getting a soupy black, as if it were filled with ash.
When I finally saw land on the horizon, I didn't see a great city like Frysta's. It was a forest. The trees stood extremely tall, pointing ominously toward the sky. The bark almost looked black, and the leaves were a dark red crimson color. The sand was also black and grainy... with several soldiers standing on it.
"This isn't going to end well..," I muttered. "Maybe you should just stay on the ship, Doctor."
He gulped,"Can do."
I shot him a look,"What do you mean can do?"
"Can do... As in I will stay on the ship."
"What happened to 'missing out' on the fun?"
"Well," he scrunched his brow. "I'd rather just watch from the sidelines."
Out of nowhere, flaming arrows rained down onto the ship. Those elves seemed to have impeccable aim. When we came ashore, a full blown battle had started. My old regeneration would excitedly fly off board, swinging swords back and forth with ease. Now, I was hesitant to step off the ship. I didn't have the same burning passion I did before to destroy. I was uncomfortable among the fighting creatures, and curious about the strange forest.
I worriedly drift my gaze back to the soldiers. Maybe I should go farther into the forest.... So that I did. I walked off the ship, and walked around the soldiers with ease. They seemed enveloped in each other, and hardly seemed to notice my presence. I quickly dashed between the open spots, and ran into the forest. It did not smell like a green, clean, and nature filled forest. It smelt like something was... burning. The grass, surprisingly, was red, like Gallifrey's. The trees stood very high above me. The bark on the trees were black and burnt, peeling off. I could hear the battle cries in the distance, but the groaning of the trees were drowning them out.
I curiously peered around the forest, trying to absorb the most information as possible with just a glance. Branches and dead leaves crunched under my feet. What will I find? Perhaps a magnificent city made of ebony, or a mountain range of diamonds.
Suddenly, the world disappeared from view. My heart jumped to my throat, as I land roughly on my back, sending a sharp pain up my spine. My chest collapsed as the wind escaped my lungs. It felt as if my lungs were empty toothpaste tubes that may never be filled again. I fell... in a hole. I looked above me, to see I had indeed fell in a grave-like hole. Someone had dug a hole, and set it as a trap. Well... at least there weren't any spikes at the bottom.
I slowly stood up, my back aching all over. I wipe my hands on my pants, which were a bit bloody from the fall. Unfortunately, the hole was about 20 feet deep, which I estimated was about 3 1/2 times more taller than I am. The light from above seemed to be a mile away. After a few minutes of furiously pacing and imaginative thinking, I decided that the only option I had was to climb. The black dirt was firm and thick, fortunately. After several tries with no success, I reached the light, and sighed in relief. I'm suddenly met with a darkened face, the face of my abductor.
"Hello there, sweetheart." His high-pitched tone sent chills down my spine. "I'm sure the Queen would love to see you."
Before I could react, he grabbed the front collar of my jacket, and lifted me up out of the pit. I grabbed his grey hands, trying to scratch them, claw them, anything I could to set myself free. He seemed stoic and unaffected by pain.
"Now now," he said in his sing-song voice. "Is that any way to welcome me back?"
I screamed until my throat was raw, but no one seemed to be able the hear my pleads. I relied on my hardwired instincts, and sunk my teeth as hard as I could into his hand.
He shrieked in agony, and immediately let me go. I quickly try to run away, but I am a really slow runner. Or maybe he's just a really fast runner. This time, he snatched the back of my collar, and threw me against a nearby tree. He grabbed my neck in one hand, and pinned me against the forest floor. I could feel the pressure go to my head, and black dots started to dance around my vision. I could feel my pulse where his grip was, and I meekly attempted to grab his wrist.
He pulled out a needle, containing electric blue liquid,"Go to sleep," he cooed softly, as he injected the liquid into my neck.
Suddenly, I felt a wave of extreme nausea come over me. All my muscles relaxed, and my world plummets into darkness.
