"This was where war happened, in someone’s backyard. Sometimes it was yours. Often, it was someone’s a world away. But it did happen.

In this moment. In the next breath. Every day.Every day, someone lived in the midst of destruction and chaos.

Every day, someone’s flower boxes filled with gunpowder’s haze, a child’s laughter turned to tears.

There had been a day when someone watered those flowers in the evening’s peaceful quiet and the children caught fireflies in mason jars.

And that day will come again, when the crickets and the bullets no longer have to compete for the night’s stage. But for now, all anyone could do was fight on the crickets’ behalf."

Chapter 14

I could only stare at the phone in my hand. The flashing of the screen indicating that the call had ended and I feel... numb. I've dealt with his lies and threats before but it never really gets old.

The fear I feel is never ending and it feels like I will never escape. I push out of my chair and walk to my window that overlooks my street. A red shirt catches my eye and as I squint, her face comes into focus and I realize it's Redd.

Thinking quick I press record on my phone to video her vehemently screaming at whoever in the rear seat. However, a guy in black walks from the side of the car and whispers something in her ear, gesturing toward my building and she suddenly stops.

I freeze and trip backwards as I see her head turning towards my window. Scrambling to my knees I crawl under the window sill to wait it out, my chest heaving with the effects of today's event.

Remebering I was still recording, I swung my phone to stop the video. As I tried to look out the window again, a harsh knock sounded from my front door. Convincing my legs to move, I quietly scrambled to my bathroom and I swung around to lock the door behind me.

Chewing on my lip, I look around to hide and hearing the air condition, I looked up. I'd forgotten as to why I would come to the bathroom as an escape but there was a vent big enough to hide me in. Shocking to think one vent could be of a size.

With a breathy smile of relief I slowly climb ontop of the sink and quickly undo the screws and did a little jump to hang from the opening.

Kicking widly, I heard voices coming closer to the door. I drag myself upward, my breathing too harsh and loud as I attempt to put the covering back.

I put a hand over my mouth to mask the sound and as I look through the opening, the door busts open. The same man from outside my window walks in first then follows Redd.

" The place is clear ma'am."

The man speaks to Redd as she looks around my bathroom with a sneer on her face.

" I know I saw something up here. She doesn't go anywhere anyway." She growls, tapping her nails on the counter.

The sound aggravating me as well as her presence in MY home. I scowl down at her, wishing I could drop and crush her with my weight. That would take care of one problem.

Redd twirls and walks back out, the man in black following. I waited twenty minutes before I even took a full breath.

Trying to maneuver my arm to reach my pocket, I slide my phone to my face. Scrolling through the different numbers, I decide what number to call because I can't get down. Seeing the number wanted, I pressed call.

As they answered, the severity of my situation hit me as my eyes watered. I'm alive.

"Hey... Can you come to my apartment? I'm in trouble..."

He sighs.
