Damon left Rio downstairs and rushed back to the attic where Elena and Lily had struck up another conversation. After another minute Rio decided he'd stay downstairs for them to come.
"You want to leave them behind?" Lily was saying as the three came down. "No, Damon, you can't save me without saving them."
"We'll come back for them. Promise. Let's go." Damon told her impatiently.
"Or we can leave you with them." Rio shrugged innocently. "Please choose that option."
"Damon, look outside! Is that the Aurora Borealis?" Elena said.
"Also known as our ticket out of here." Bonnie said, walking in, looking at Elena. "You got it?"
"Yeah." Elena pulled the ascendant out of her pocket.
"Where's psycho-siphoner?"
"He's preoccupied. Guess he's going to have to take the next train home."
"You can't leave him here!"
"Trust me. It's a better fate than what I had planned." Bonnie said, eyes darkening with anger.
"You have got to be kidding me!" Damon exclaimed, as they all noticed Lily missing. "Go. Start the damn spell. I'll go get her."
"Bloody hell, create another prison world if you have to. Transport him to the middle of the ocean or whatever. But you can't leave him here."
"He can't leave here."
"Then take him back to a newer prison world." Rio argued. "You don't understand. Leaving him here is dangerous."
"Yeah. Dangerous for him." Bonnie ignore Rio and started chanting. Finally Damon appeared with Lily and Rio looked around for Kai. In the midst of the spell, Rio spotted him and tried to bring him with them, but Bonnie had his feet firmly planted on the ground so he couldn't physically move.
"Bonnie!" The psycho-siphoner yelled.
"Bonnie, no!" Rio shouted and Damon held tightly onto him. He felt Bonnie let go of him and tried to go for the siphoner but by the time he got out of Damon's hold, he was back on their earth plane. "Seriously?"
"Why are you defending him? You don't even know him."
"Because I'm thinking about the consequences of your actions, Bonnie. I get you hate him, but do try to remember that I know a lot more about witchcraft than you. I've been around for over a century. My wife grew up a witch, my daughter is a witch. Leaving Malachai with a bunch of vampires in another universe has dire consequences."
"You have a daughter?" Lily asked. "How is it possible?"
"Don't you worry, Lily. You're never going to have anything to do with her."
"And how is Charlotte?" Lily asked.
"Like you care. Anyways, I came here to stop you guys, give you advice but clearly my counsel isn't worth much so I'm going. Goodbye."
"Wait- Rio!" Lily said, stopping him.
"What?"
"I don't want you to think I don't care. I've always cared."
"You're talking to the wrong son." Rio told her and started to walk away.
"Rio- you're my oldest son. My first son." Elena, Bonnie and Damon left the two to talk in private.
"Let's be real here, Lily. It's just me and you. Your oldest son is Malcolm. Your first and favourite vampire, remember? You were the one who said that, so don't act surprised. And really? You're asking about my wife? You know she hated you almost as much as I do. Out of respect at the fact that you gave birth to me, she tried to give you the benefit of the doubt. And you screwed her over. Don't act like you care. I told Damon if he brought you back to this world, then I'm leaving and that's exactly what I plan to do. Because there is no way any of my children are coming anywhere near this town as long as you reside on this earth."
"You said children. It seems I'm not the only one who has moved on. Who has started a family of their own."
"No you're the only one who has abandoned them."
"And what do you call what you're doing?"
"I am nothing like you." Rio spat.
"I disagree, Rio. Deep down you know you'd choose Charlotte and your new family over your brothers."
"Charlotte is dead!" Rio burst out. "Are you happy?! My wife died a few years back in this very town so this is the town I want to avoid. What I want is for my brothers to get the hell out of this cursed down, and for you to go back to the hell that was made for you."
"Oh Rio. I'm so sorry-" Lily started but Rio cut her off.
"Stop it! For God's sake, I already know you, so stop trying to keep up the pretenses. I remember every single word you said. You told me exactly how you felt, about me, and about Damon and Stefan. Say all you want about me, but when it comes to my family- including my brothers- then there is no excuse. You never liked me. When Damon was born you were glad you had another baby to look after, so that you didn't have to look after me. And then when Stefan was born you had more reason to never have time for me. And then you detested me, because father cared for me. Looked after me. Acted like my father. And you always hated that he loved me more than you."
"That is not true. I loved that he loved you. Because it meant he'd have less time for me."
"Don't lie. You always wanted him to care about you. But I suppose when he saw how much of a bitch you were, he didn't love you. I always thought, maybe father was too harsh on you. Maybe you deserved better. Maybe my father wasn't the best but I've just realised he was a good man. A few misguided beliefs, sure, but a good man. He just got tired of your shit."
"Rio, enough!" Damon said speeding between the two. "Enough."
"Wow." Rio said, looking directly at Lily. "No wonder you were so quiet, you know Damon was listening in. You had plenty to say the last time I saw you. I should've known."
"I said enough, Rio!"
"I've just about had enough too." Rio rolled his eyes and looked at his brother. "I guess this is where I say see ya later."
"Rio, the road's that way!" Damon said as Rio headed to the forest.
"I'm catching a ride." Rio called back and sped away.
