Rio led the two to the old Salvatore estate. Outside the house was Lily. Rio motioned to Damon and Elena to go ahead and the two walked tentatively. Lily, noticing movement, looked up.
"Damon?" She asked shocked.
"Hello, mother." He said, obviously overwhelmed. Lily looked past him and saw Rio.
"Tiberius?" She asked confused. Rio just rolled his eyes and shrugged.
"Whatever, let's just get this over with."
"Come- come in." She invited and Elena pulled a shocked Damon along, leaving Rio to once again trail behind.
"Forgive me for staring, I'd given up hope of ever seeing anyone again." Lily brought in the firewood she'd been gathering outside, and began starting a fire. There was a silence before she spoke up. "Would you like some tea?"
"Um, sure." Elena spoke up, once it became evident neither Salvatore would speak up.
"There was a time I marked days on a calendar," She said once the kettle boiled and joined them at the coffee table, pouring them each a cup of tea before sitting across from them. "I gave up after a few years, but, judging by your bizarre attire..."
"You've been in here for over a century" Elena told her.
"Yeah, I would have come by sooner, but I thought you were safe and sound in the family crypt." He smiles fakely. "My bad. What's your excuse, Rio?"
"Oh, I did visit. She seemed alive enough so I moved on."
"What are you talking about?" Lily asked.
"Oh, you wouldn't have seen me. I was invisible." Realising Rio harbored a lot of anger towards her, she changed the subject, looking at Damon.
"Technically, I did die in 1858, after a nurse in the TB ward fed me vampire blood."
"And you never thought to stop by and clear things up?" Damon accused. Lily stood and returned the kettle to the fire.
"How did you end up here, Mrs. Salvatore?" Elena changed the subject.
"Mrs Salvatore?" Damon whispered incredulously.
"I don't know what to call her!" Elena whispered back.
"You two do realise we're all vampires, right. Whispering doesn't work." Rio said and Elena sat back up, looking sheepish.
"Please, call me Lily. It was October 31st, 1903. I had just arrived in New York Harbor. The night sky was alive with this beautiful shimmering light. And, out of nowhere, a coven of witches attacked. When I woke, they were gone. Everyone was gone. That night, the sky danced with colors again, and it's done so every night since."
"It's called prison. You must have pissed off a lot of people." Damon said, sarcastically.
"I've heard that that tends to happen when people go on a murdering spree, Damon."
"That life seems like forever ago." Lily smiled. Damon picked up a small glass dropper next to some blood.
"So, what. You're on a diet?"
"I depleted every slaughterhouse within walking distance, and every butcher's shop along the hellish trek from New York to Mystic Falls. This blood, is the last of the blood here. Two drops a week, just to stay awake."
"That sounds miserable." Elena sympathised.
"I manage. I heard you and your brother turned during the war." She paused. "I'm talking about Stefan. I had no idea what had become of Rio until we crossed paths." Damon just hummed in response. "Your father must have been horrified!"
" He was! And then, Stefan ripped his throat out." Damon sounded nonchalant. Lily burst into laughter, and Rio glared at her.
"I apologize-- that's cruel to laugh, but... good for Stefan. I truly hated that man."
"Which is why you started dating Julian, isn't that right?"
"He is nothing like your father."
"Oh, that's right. He's a slimy pest. But then, what would I expect? We're talking about you." Rio insulted.
"Rio!" Elena gasped.
"I'm sorry you don't take to him, but I hardly need your approval. I understand you hate me, feel free to do so, but Julian has done nothing to deserve your hate. I'm sorry I hated your father, but it's not my fault he was what he was." Lily spat.
"Right. You hated father. So much so that you left your kids with him, faked your own death, and then went out to join the Ripper Coalition."
"Well, it's nice to see that you've grown into yourself, Damon." Rio leaned back, rolling his eyes. How typical of her! "How is your brother?"
"Stefan's turned his humanity off. That's the only reason we're here."
"Don't lie, Damon. Didn't your mother teach you it's wrong?" Rio said.
"Okay. What is your deal? Why exactly do you hate her?" Damon asked.
"I would've told you, had you listened to me earlier. But since we're here. Why don't you ask her why. Go on, Lily. Tell him what you told me the last time we saw each other."
"I'm sorry my words hurt you, Rio. Truly, it wasn't what I wanted."
"Oh please. You words haven't hurt me since I was fifteen."
"You know what, we're wasting time." Elena said. "Mrs- Lily, we came here to bring you back with us, because you can save Stefan. You can bring him back."
"And, you believe I can reconnect Stefan with his humanity?"
"The last memory Stefan has of you is a vision of an angel telling him 'Everything is going to be okay.'" Elena said and Lily smiled.
"So, you're gonna be an angel again. He doesn't need to how how screwed-up you really are." Damon explained.
"Of course I'll help! I'd love nothing more than to see him again."
"Pack your bags." Damon stood.
"Wonderful! I'll alert the others, hmm?"
"You'll alert who, now?" Damon asked.
"You knew so much about me, I assumed you'd heard of my traveling companions?"
"What traveling companions?" Damon asked, even more confused.
"She wasn't the only one to be captured Damon. She has a coven, of ripper freaks, remember?" Rio said and Lily smiled, before leading them into the attic.
"Everyone, meet my son Damon. He's here to take us home." Rio rolled his eyes.
"Damon. A word?" He asked and Damon nodded. The two sped to the bathroom and opened the tap. Surprisingly, the water was still working. "You still want to take her home? Look at her. You don't even like her. I've noticed your jabs, too."
"I'm hurt that she didn't come for us, Rio. But what if we go back, and it doesn't work? What if Stefan doesn't turn his humanity back on? I doubt she'll come with us."
"Damon, it'll work. I'm begging you. I will tell you every single thing about her, but trust me. She's a monster."
"I have to, Rio. I'm sorry."
"She won't leave without her so-called family, you know? Hey, there's someone else here that could be Stefan's emotional trigger. Let's bring one of Lily's traveling companions instead."
"Who?"
"There was this girl Stefan liked, before Katherine. She was a witch, not that Stefan knew, but she was sent by Lily to check on Stefan, just like one of her vampires was sent by Lily to check on you during the war."
"What now?"
"Listen, it could work, for some reason, I'm forgetting her name. But yeah, she and Stefan were pretty close."
"If Elena doesn't work then that girl you're talking about won't. Whatever her name is." Damon closed the tap and rushed upstairs.
