As Stephan promised, Gregor didn't see the sunrise. He made the morning news the next day. He died in a brutal car accident. Stefan is a man of his word and that is not the only word he kept. He surprised me with a nursery for Bas and just as promised, my son has moved in and I get to see him every day. I couldn't have been happier to be reunited with my son but Merideth is beyond frustrated. To her, Bas being with me is a sign I am abandoning their crusade. She fears I will settle in and get comfortable.
"You used me to get him to give you your son back and now I hear you're marrying him. Wasn't the plan to get him to spill his secrets?" She questioned furiously. "Is this some ploy to complete your twisted little family?"
"Maybe." I shrugged.
I have no interest in dragging Stefan through the mud. I just want my son to be safe and for him never to be pulled from my arms. Everyone else can go to hell for all I care. Stefan can commit all the crimes he wants as long as Bas and I are not separated from each other.
"Let me remind you that if you purposely obstruct us from arresting Stefan, I will personally see to it that your son is permanently ripped from your arms and put in foster care. I will make sure that you rot in jail next to your boyfriend."
When will people understand that I will do anything and everything for my son regardless of the cost or collateral damage?
"Merideth, you don't scare me. Threaten me again and I'll have Stefan descend on you like the beast he is."
I pushed her out of my way but she yanked me back.
"This man you want to protect is the devil. Anyone who sells their soul to the devil is as good as dead."
"I choose the winning team and right now that's not you. Show me you're winning and maybe ill side with you." I moved away from her leaving the pantry and heading to the living room where Bas is playing. The sight that met my eyes, caught me by surprise. Stefan is playing with my son. It is an intimate scene. I stopped to take in with Viktor's words playing at the back of my mind.
What if he is Bas' father?
The thought scares me but it makes the most sense because Cole will still be the good man I thought he was. It will be easier to blame Stefan.
"What are you guys doing?" I asked with a big smile.
Stefan looked up from the mat they were sitting on. I gazed between him and Bas trying to find some resemblance but there was none. Even the blue of their eyes is different.
"We are playing a game I honestly don't understand. We are just moving cars around." He chuckled pressing a kiss on the side of my son's head.
Bas is very fond of toy cars. He has every type made and seeing him so fascinated by little things makes me wonder who he has taken after. I was a serious child.
"Daddy look!"
We both froze staring at the boy in horror.
"It's a mistake. He won't do that again." Stefan assured me as quickly as he could hoping to make me feel better.
"Daddy! Daddy! Daddy!" He went on a chanting spree looking at Stefan. He tried to shush him but Bas is on a roll.
"Can I talk to you please?" I asked.
We stood by the fireplace glancing at the little boy who is still chanting 'daddy' as if he rehearsed beforehand to traumatize me.
"I'm sorry. He didn't mean that. It was random and unexpected." He apologized. "I'm sure he wasn't talking about me."
"Are you his father?" I posed the question openly without reserve.
Stefan seemed slightly confused.
"What now?"
