Worthiness is defined as suitability. However suitability is subjective. Worthiness is not so definitely defined as is the sense of being worthy. While studying self esteem today I grappled with the question of my own worthiness and what that question implied in defining my existence in the cosmic phase space. The two factor theory of self esteem defines self esteem on the basis of competence and worthiness. If that be so then whoever I am can be defined by these two independent questions:
a) Am I competent?
b) Am I worthy?
While the first part of the question may have a definite answer obtained through some ambiguous humane parameter the latter is not defined by any objective scale but rather by the entity that I use in particular to define my worthiness. In my case that entity is God.
Then there comes the obvious hitch. The window to worthiness is communication. The more I can communicate with the entity from whom I draw my sense of worthiness the more I can attain a desired sense of worthiness. However communication with the almighty isn't that a commonplace thing. I do not categorize myself as a prophecy of yore and as such cannot claim a direct connection with divinity. So I sit in prayer.
Prayer till today had always been an act of centering my priorities. However prayer is also a means of gaining a sense of worthiness and applying it to reflect in my attitude or personality. Prayer is the communication channel between humanity and divinity.
When I sit in prayer not only is my focus on asking but it is also focused on receiving and answer for the asked question. Whether that prayer is asked or not is a test of my worthiness and adds or subtracts from my self esteem.
Now God doesn't just talk to us in our prayer. He speaks through the word of God. So how much I am acquainted with the Bible helps me communicate. Knowing the Bible is not about memorizing verses and chapters but rather practicing the code of law as given in the law book of God. That requires a certain competency.
Now worthiness based self esteem is supposed to be the opposite of competence based self esteem. However it is a single self in question. While one may choose to discriminate between the two, both reach a common ground when dealing with prayer.
