Sidon's P.O.V.
"Good," I called out over the clicking of the sticks. Laruta nodded, her face scrunched into a look of intense concentration. I swung lightly, she responded with a well timed roll and tap on my side.
I smiled and leaned heavily onto my stick, "very good Lari! Now let's take a break and get some dinner," I said, looking up at the sun.
It was just setting behind the mountains surrounding the Domain. I breathed in deeply, enjoying the crisp air. I wished deeply that Link could be here to enjoy this, but now I can only hope for his safety. All of today I have felt an overwhelming feeling of dread, but I guess that could be a number of things all coming together.
I snapped back to see Laruta tugging at my shirt, "siddy? Can I go have a bath? I'm all sweaty and gross," she shuffled a little and let go of my shirt.
I smiled warmly, "yes of course dear. There should be a stream running from Ruta's Pool. You can bathe there, and I should have supper finished by then," I said, shooing her off.
She giggled and ran off towards the divine beast. I sighed heavily, limping to where I dropped my cane. I switched the stick I had for my cane, then I went to my pack. I sighed and pulled off my sweaty shirt. I tossed it beside my bag and then went down on one knee by my bag. I grabbed the large bundle of firewood that was on the top of it, untying it in one easy motion.
I set up the fire, then I used some flint and metal to light the dry wood. It soon went up in a brilliant red glow. The yellow and orange flames kicked up over the wood before opening its fiery maw and swallowing it whole. I set up a makeshift cooking pot, then i threw some ingredients for a stew into it.
I sat back, the smell of smoke and cooking filling the air. The sky was now a bruised purple, the sun no longer visible, but the bright white moon was. The pale grey smoke curled dreamily into the dark sky. The remaining light gleamed off of the metal of Vah Ruta, the blue glow emanating from it growing stronger in the low light. The soft grass around me sighed as a gentle breeze blew through, causing the flames to reach the way it was blowing.
I breathed in deeply. The grass smelled sweet, and when I moved me hands I noticed that dew was starting to settle. The fire crackled, the smoke swirling around, the smell of the wood smoke hung in the air. I always loved that smell, it reminds me of when Mipha would bring me up here for a sleep over by Ruta.
The smell of the food wafted through the air. I flopped back into the soft grass, it blew around, tickling my face and fins. I closed my eyes and breathed deeply. All I heard was the soft swish of grass and the crackle of the fire.
All of a sudden a weight dropped into my chest, knocking the wind from me. My eyes snapped open to see Laruta giggling while sitting on my chest. Her pink scales were still glistening from the river water, and her young eyes were filled with joy.
"For Hylia's sake child! Have you ever thought about being a scout or an assassin? Like you were amazingly quiet," I joked, sitting up and grabbing her under her arms. I sat her down beside me and smiled down at her.
She giggled, "no," I grabbed the bowls and dishes out some stew. I snorted at her, "well, when Link gets back I'm sure he'll help me train you and you will be the best little sword master in all of Hyrule!" I motioned extravagantly and chuckled.
Laruta furrowed her brow, "but what about you and Link? You guys are the best swords men I can think of," She fiddled with her spoon as she spoke.
I smiled and bumped her gently with my shoulder, "Well, it'll pay off to have us both teach you, now won't it?" She looked up to me and smiled wide, I snorted, "Alright eat up, maybe we'll train a little after. We still need to work on getting you more graceful on land. When Link gets back he will handle the on land training and I will handle in the water training," I spoke as I stared into the fire, thinking.
Laruta started shovelling the stew into her mouth. She stopped when her bowl was empty. I soon finished mine as well, I set the bowl aside and turned back to Laruta, who was staring into the fire, seemingly deep in thought.
"Lari, whatcha thinking about?" I asked playfully. She jumped a little and shook her head as if to clear it.
She looked up at me, "well I was thinking, and you said that Link can train me on land, but what if we don't get along?" She seemed nervous, she fiddled with the grass.
I chuckled a little, "trust me, you and Link will get along fine," I said as I nudged her a little with my elbow.
She hummed a little, still looking down, "will he act like a dad for me, like you?" She asked hesitantly.
I was a little taken aback, but I regained my composure quickly, "of course dear. He will be glad to," I said, smiling warmly down at her.
She smiled back, then jumped up, "you promised more training," she grabbed her stick and pointed it to me. I chuckled and nodded, grabbing my stick and using it to help me up.
"Now, I didn't teach you really how to stand and move, and I do believe that Link would be better suited to show you this, but I'm the best you have right now," I said as I held out my stick, "now you want to keep your centre low, so it will be harder for you to be knocked off your feet. Good, now you will get more power when holding the sword with two hands, but that gets rid of the ability to carry a shield, so I want you to hold the stick with one hand,"
Laruta nodded quickly, standing at the ready. I looked over her stance, nodding after adjusting her stance slightly. We ran through some easy steps, and soon she began to pick it up.
We stayed training until the light died and the fire dwindled to ashes. I blocked one of Laruta's attacks, "Alright, we should head to bed. We will want to wake up early so we can train and head back to the Domain. I will keep teaching you on land until Link returns, then he will take over and you will train under water as well," I leaned heavily into my stick.
I know that my leg will get better, and I will be able to walk without a cane after a while. I will still have the limp, but it won't be sore like it is.
Laruta sighed and nodded. She walked slowly to the tent that I set up. She leaned her stick against the side and sat down under the canopy of the tent. I chuckled and limped over to the tent as well. I tossed down my stick and ducked into the tent. I lay down on my back, laying an arm across my chest.
Laruta flopped down, resting her head on my stomach. I smiled, "goodnight little warrior," I said warmly.
Laruta mumbled, half asleep already, "goodnight dad."
I smiled widely, and soon the warm embrace of sleep took me.
