Gabbie closes her eyes as she feels the wind blow through her hair as Em drives back toward the village. She is unaware of Jared's smile as he gazes at his older sister. She has grown so much from the past few months and he is so proud of her. It's Embry who breaks her out of her thoughts as he begins to speak.
"Hey, how did Jake get around the injunction anyway?"
"The... what?"

Gabbie leans through the small gap in the window. "The order. You know, to not spill the beans. How did he tell you about this?"

"Oh, that, He didn't. I guessed right."

Embry purses his lips, looking surprised. "Hmm. S'pose that would work."

"Where are we going?" asks Bella and Gabbie smiles.

"Emily's house." she replies cheerfully.

"She's Sam's girlfriend... no, fiancee, now, I guess." Jared joins the conversation. "They'll meet us back there after Sam gives it to them for what just happened. And after Paul and Jake scrounge up some new clothes."

"If Paul even has any left." Embry states and Gabbie shoots him a glare.

"Does Emily know about...?"

"Yeah. And hey, don't stare at her. That bugs Sam."

Bella frowns at Embry. "Why would I stare?"

Embry looks uncomfortable. "Like you saw just now, hanging out around werewolves has its risks." He changes the subject quickly. "Hey, are you okay about the whole thing with the black-haired bloodsucker in the meadow? It didn't look like he was a friend of yours, but." Embry shrugs.

"No, he wasn't my friend."

"Nor mine."

Embry smiles and looks at her through the rearview mirror. "I know Gabs... you've told us multiple times in many words." He then turns his eyes back on the road. "That's good. We didn't want to start anything, break the treaty, you know."

"Oh, yeah, Jake told me about the treaty once, a long time ago. Why would killing Laurent break the treaty?"

"Laurent," he repeats, snorting, "Well, we were technically on Cullen turf. We're not allowed to attack any of them, the Cullens, at least, off our land... unless they break the treaty first. We didn't know if the black-haired one was a relative of theirs or something. Looked like you knew him."

"How would they go about breaking the treaty?"

"If they bite a human. Jake wasn't so keen on the idea of letting it go that far."

"Oh. Um, thanks. I'm glad you didn't wait."

"Their pleasure, trust me." snorts out Gabbie.

Embry drives past the easternmost house on the highway before turning off onto a narrow dirt road. "Your truck is slow," he notes.

"Embry!"

"Sorry." apologizes Bella.

At the end of the lane is a tiny house that had once been gray. There is only one narrow window beside the weathered blue door, but the window box under it is filled with bright orange and yellow marigolds, giving the whole place a cheerful look. Embry opens the truck door and inhales. "Mmm, Emily's cooking."

"It's the best." comments Gabbie to Bella as her and Jared jump off the truck. Jared heads for the door, but Embry stops him with one hand on his chest; He looks at the human meaningfully, and clears his throat.

"I don't have my wallet on me," states Jared and Gabbie rolls her eyes knowing it's probably a fib.

"That's okay. I won't forget." Embry swears.
