Chapter Seven

Raziel

An hour later, he had cleaned her wound and it was healing quite nicely. Angels naturally healed faster than humans thanks to the special genes they were blessed with. She would be more than ok in a mere few days. Healed almost as good as new. All she had left to do was to learn how to live on without the presence of her wings.

After sitting in silence for a while, Raziel decided he couldn't hold back anymore.

"Ariel. I must ask you a question. I fear I will go insane if I don't."

She looked up at him from where she was sitting at the top of the bed. She had taken one of his books from the table and was staring at it blankly. Lost in her thoughts and unable to focus on the words. He had a sudden urge to discover what was troubling her so. But no. He couldn't, there were more important things at hand.

"I must ask you a question. Please answer me honestly."

Staring at him apprehensively she slowly nodded her head.

"Very well, what do you need to ask me?"

"Do you feel anything? Anything at all between us? When we're near each other or when we touch. Is there a spark? A tension perhaps."

He saw when her muscles tense and her back straighten. He watched as she melded herself into defensive mode. He observed as her proverbial walls came up, attempting to block him. Determined to deny him access to her inner thoughts and emotions. Trying to shut him out.

"I don't know anything about what you are talking about."

His gaze fixed on her face, he analyzed her. She was lying, he could tell. Her eyes had gone wide and she wouldn't quite meet his eyes.

"Ariel."

Her eyes were full of fire when they snapped back up to meet his, capturing and holding him there with a scorching glare.

"What?" Her voice was full of venom and it was all directed at him.

"Calm down little one, no need to burn me," his voice was a dangerous purr.

He locked his eyes on hers. The intensity of the connection between them shook him to his core. He had to get to the bottom of this.

"Tell me, can you truly say that you feel nothing? Can it be that I am the only one feeling this way? That you don't feel the electricity that runs through my veins at your touch? Does my voice not unravel your mind as yours does to mine? Am I the only one? Does my presence not make you want to plaster your body to mine, to close all space that is between us and revel in the warmth between us? When I am in your presence it is all I can do not to hold you close and never let go. Do you truly feel none of this?"

The blockade she had thrown up crumbled before his eyes.

"I do feel that," she held his gaze, he was unable to look elsewhere, "I feel it all, and it terrifies me."

Her hands started to shake and he observed as she quickly brought her knees up to her chest, clutching them with her fingers. She visibly curled in on herself.

"My angel, why does it terrify you?"

"Because I don't know what this is. It's an unknown, an uncertainty. With all that's happened to me, I don't need anything else that I can't know and therefore can't control."

It was tearing at his very soul seeing her like this; hurting, uncertain, and afraid.

Leaning forward, he tried to send her a wave of reassurance.

"I too am very uncertain. I don't know any more about what this is then you do. When I first touched you after I found you tonight a jolt hit me and seemed to travel through me until it pierced my soul and stayed there. I am clueless. And that makes me very unnerved. I like to know what is going on, I don't like to be caught off guard."

She blinked at him, her chin resting on her knees, "I just don't know what this is."

He nodded, "I am determined to get to the bottom of this. The sooner we know what is causing this, the sooner we can know how to deal with it."

Her head tilted to the side, studying him, she was obviously curious. "How will we do that? Who could possibly know what has come between us?"

He sat back, thinking for a moment. A name came to him, a name of someone he hadn't thought about in decades, much less talked to.

"There is a Fallen, he is very old. Some say he is one of the first angels, an ancient. If anyone could help us it would be him. As soon as you are fully healed we will journey to where he resides."

Her whole body visibly relaxed. Like a balloon losing air, she deflated, the stress leaving.

"That's good, that's really good."

Her body clearly exhausted, she moved to curl up on her side. The leftover pain from her wound mixed with the stress she had just been bombarded with had drained the little energy she had left.

Studying her for a minute longer, he sighed.

"Don't be afraid little one, you are safe with me. I don't know why, but my first instinct is to protect you. And so protect you I will."
