Chapter Eight

Ariel

This was so overwhelming for her. So much had happened since she had been sentenced to earth. It had only been one day and already so much had changed. She had no wings, they were ripped away from her. She was a Fallen now, that was wrongly forced upon her. And now there was this connection with Raziel. Whatever it was. She knew that change was good, she had always believed that, but this was so much at one time. And how did she know if any of it was good change? Because at the moment, none of the change appeared to be for her good.

The only exception was whatever this was with Raziel. Whatever it was, she thought that it might have potential to be a good thing. After all, it didn't seem to be evil or bad in nature. It was simply an unknown.

That, she could deal with she guessed. She had always been good at taking what was thrown at her and making the best of it. She supposed she could do the same with this. How hard could it be?

"You should be fully healed in another day or two, we will leave then. In the meantime, I will work with you and help you adjust to no longer having your wings. It's hard but I've been through it before and I will be able to help you through experience. Your balance will be thrown off, but you can easily adjust. I know you will."

At his words, her heart filled with a warmth that she couldn't quite explain.

"Thank you," she said with a small voice.

He simply nodded his head.

"No I am serious," this was said a little louder, her voice a bit stronger.

She leaned in his direction, determined to grab his attention.

"Thank you. I wouldn't be alive if it wasn't for you. My will to live left me the minute they threw me down to earth, the removal of my wings was only the nail in the coffin. I wouldn't have moved. I would have laid there, slowly bleeding out. Even my angel healing abilities had shut down with me. I would have died right there where I laid. You saved me."

She had to make him understand. He had given her a will to live.

"I could do nothing else. I saw you laying there and everything inside of me told me to get you and do what I could do to revive you. I couldn't let you die."

His eyes were intense. They trapped her gaze, keeping her encaged in his web. She couldn't have look away if she wanted to. And frankly, she didn't. He had beautiful eyes. So blue, bluer than the sky on a cloudless day. They were as dangerous as they were beautiful.

"Rest. We have a long journey ahead of us, you will need all the strength you can get. Plus sleep will assist your angel genes in speeding up the healing process."

"No need to be so bossy."

With a smirk, he moved to sit in the chair placed at the table in the corner of the room.

That smirk, God it should be illegal. Nothing should be able to affect someone to that extent.

"So, who is this really old angel we're going to see?"

Placing his elbow on the table he leaned his head into his hand, fixing his piercing eyes on her.

"His name is Haniel. He is one of the archangels. Or well, excuse me, at least he was before he Fell. He was stripped of that title as well as his wings. But he is still very old and wise, he's been through many different ages and he just might have some knowledge he can give us regarding our dilemma here."

Something deep inside her protested against him calling whatever this was between them a dilemma. She didn't know why but it did. It despised the fact that he could classify this as a problem, something that had to be solved and removed.

"I see."

He studied her, his gaze seeming to pierce through her mind and unearth her inner thoughts.

"Something is wrong. What is it?"

She shook her head, "Nothing is wrong."

He stared at her a minute longer and it was made clear by his gaze that he didn't quite believe her. However, he didn't push her any further. And for that, she was grateful. She wasn't ready to confront her inner emotions and she knew that there was no way she was prepared to confess them to Raziel.

He sighed and his gaze on her changed, molded into a softer nature.

"Sleep Ariel. You need to heal. If you don't rest, the wounds will flare up again and our journey will be delayed eve more."

Sighing, she grudgingly complied.

Moving to lay on her stomach, she brought her arms up to hug the pillow her head rested on.

"Whatever you say bossy pants."

He was so demanding, always trying to tell her what to do. And while it annoyed her to no end, she knew it was all done for her benefit and that enabled her to endure it. After all, he could be bossy all he wanted to but that didn't mean that she had to obey him.

His chuckle sounded from beside her. He had moved to stand next to the bed.

"Little angel, you should be really thankful I find your sass endearing. Otherwise..." he allowed his words to drag on, attempting to give off an intimidating vibe.

She knew she should take the warning seriously. After all, she had known him for less than a day. She should still be somewhat apprehensive when in his presence. However, her soul felt safe with him. Something inside her said that he wouldn't hurt her, that he couldn't. And so, she didn't worry.

He leaned over her, pulling the blanket up to cover her shoulders. And as he pulled back, he allowed his hand to brush over her head, lingering in her hair for mere seconds.

He moved back to sit in his chair.

As sleep began to consume her, a smile formed upon her lips.

Maybe this could be a good thing.
