Shane felt this sort of emptiness in his life. Ryan did too. It took a while to realize it, but then they both realized that the emptiness was from each other.
The tension between them grew and grew everyday. They ignored each others phone calls, texts, emails, and more. And for what? There was no real reason.
Shane's urge to spend some quality time with Ryan came to a highpoint. Shane decided to make plans to drive Ryan home from work, instead of him having to pay for an Uber. He knew Ryan hated Ubers.
That day, Shane texted Ryan:
Hey, how about I drive you home from work today instead of you having to pay those 'excruciating' prices for an Uber? I have a car seat in the trunk.. lol!
Ryan received an alert from his phone. As he opened his messaging app, he noticed that the message was from Shane. Totally forgetting he had his reads on, he hesitantly opened the text message. "Damn it, my reads," he mumbled after he read the message. He had to reply now, otherwise it would be totally obvious that he was avoiding Shane. Not like it wasn't obvious enough already.
Ryan replied with a simple:
Sounds good.
After debating for a while, he didn't know if the period at the end was too much or not.
Shane read the text from Ryan. 'Oh gosh,' Shane thought. 'He didn't put my name.' That was the one way you could tell if Ryan was angry with you. He would basically refuse to say your name. Shane missed hearing Ryan say his name. After these long weeks not talking at all, he was even now desperate to see him write it.

Later on after work, Shane had just buckled his seat belt when he saw Ryan approaching his car. His palms began to sweat and his heartbeat picked up a little at the sight of Ryan. 'Why am I so nervous all of a sudden?' Shane thought to himself. 'It's only Ryan.'
He was deep in thought trying to figure out a way to be calm, when Ryan jumped into the front seat.
After Ryan shut the door, Shane hesitated before speaking. "The airbag could really hurt you Ryan. See? It says here that if you're below the height of," Shane read exactly what it said on the airbag warning label, " 57 inches the airbag could kill or seriously injure you."
Ryan smiled despite his efforts to conceal it. He let out a small chuckle when Shane started the engine of the car. He thought Shane didn't see it, but he did.
Shane was secretly glad that he enjoyed the joke. He wasn't sure if he should've made it in the first place due to their distant relationship, but after seeing Ryan smile like that, he knew it was worth it.
Shane continued to drive forward, coming to the intersection that led to the highway. He began to talk about his day, trying to kill the awkward tension in the air.
