"none of the open knife cases fit," layla told hotch, "me and reid looked through all of them."
"tell me there's a but," hotch said.
"we looked a different way and checked for home invasions," reid answered.
"three months ago there was a prowler called in directly outside of the kyles' house," layla elaborated, "the witness was walking his dog in a nearby park. going back to his car, he saw a man in dark clothing go over the back wall and start sneaking up to the house."
"by the time the state police got there the prowler was gone," reid concluded for her.
"only one man?" hotch asked.
reid nodded as layla said, "apparently."
"we aren't sure if the witness was able to describe him, because it's not in the case file," layla said before hotch could even ask.
"is there a name and address for the witness?" hotch asked.
"tobias hankle, he lives about an hour from here," layla responded.
"it's a long shot, but he might be able to give us a description. why don't reid and jj go out there, see if you can find mr. hankle and see if he remembers something," hotch suggested.
reid nodded, "on it," he said before getting up to find jj.
"agent hotchner," agent frank said to grab hotch's attention as he entered the room.
"yeah?" hotch replied, turning to face him.
"state just responded to another murder," he said solemnly.
"let me gather my team and then we'll head to the scene."
the team, minus jj and reid, piled into two suv's and headed to the scene.
"feeling alone without your lover ramsi?" morgan teased.
"nope, he's in good hands," she replied with a grin.
derek chuckled, "heard he took you out earlier."
layla shrugged, "he owed me a coffee," she said casually.
emily rolled her eyes from the passenger seat, "he could've just brought you a coffee the first morning we were back at quantico. but he took you out."
