I hate being late to class. I hate how everyone turns to look at you when you walk through the doors. I like to be at least 5 minutes early.
I'm currently running through the hallway with 4 minutes left till first period starts. Lucas texted me last minute that he wasn't going to school today. I had to get Mom out of bed so she could take me. Of course, she took forever to get ready.
I make my way out of the crowd of students in the hallways and run pass several students. Out of the blue, I trip and lose my balance only to fall into the arms of, none other than, Corbin Foxx. His arms are wrapped around me to prevent me from falling face down to the floor. I glare at him only to realize he was already staring at me. He definitely purposely tripped me just like he did to Lucas.
"I think you just fell for me," Corbin joke with a grin. I roll my eyes at his ridiculously cheesy line and get out of his hold. I sneer at him before walking away.
"You're welcome," he calls after me but I don't bother looking back.
-
"Where are you? School was over 10 minutes ago," I leave a voicemail for Mom.
I've been waiting for her to pick me up for 10 minutes now. I just want to go home. Today has been lonely without Lucas. I wonder why he didn't show up to school today. I texted him this morning but he never responded back.
He's been distancing himself from me lately. I wonder what's wrong.
"Oh no. Don't tell me your precious princess isn't here today to take you home." Corbin appear from behind me. I turn to him and roll my eyes.
"Just leave me alone," I beg him.
My eyes follow him as he walks to my side. "Need a ride?"
I quickly answer, "No."
He didn't bother listening to me as he grab my hand and drag me along with him. Why ask if he's just going to ignore me anyway?
I struggle to get my hand out of his hold, but his grip tightens the more I struggle.
"We have a project to do," Corbin said.
"We can do it tomorrow," I reason while trying to get my hand out of his hold. He's taking me to the parking lot - maybe to his car. I don't want to go with him.
I lower my head and bite his arm causing him to groan in pain and let go of my hand. I take this moment to run away from him, but he notice me and quickly grab my arm before I could even escape.
"That was a big mistake, Hazel." He gaze at me like I'm his prey. Scared, I step a few feet away from him, but he pull me closer to him and wrap his arm tightly around my shoulder.
"Let's go," he said before walking with me to his car. Oh god, he's going to kill me.
-
To my surprise, Corbin took me to a park nearby. Mostly because I was screaming my lungs out the window and people were giving Corbin and I weird looks. At least now, I'm safe. He wouldn't kill me with this many kids in the playground. Right?
We're currently sitting on the grass under a tree next to the playground. Corbin suggested playing 20 questions to get to know each other more. What do I have to lose?
"What are your hobbies?" I ask the first question.
"Football, basketball, sports mostly," he answer then asks, "Why do you like Lucas so much?"
My face twist with confusion. "That has nothing to do with our project."
"Yes, it does. I'll know what you like or dislike," he reply with a smartass response. I scoff, but answer willingly.
"Because he's always there for me."
"He's not here now," he state the obvious causing me to roll my eyes.
"Where do you see yourself in 10 years from now?" I ask the next question.
"Alone," he answer casually to my surprise, "Taking over the family business, maybe."
His answer took me by surprise. Does he really see himself being alone 10 years from now? "What about your friends? A family of your own?"
"Being a loner is better than having plenty of friends who don't really care," he said with a blank expression. I look at him, completely speechless. I thought all his friends love him. I would always see them by his side no matter what at school.
"My turn," he smile and asks, "Why are you so stubborn?" There's the Corbin I know and hate.
"I'm not." My answer caused Corbin to snicker disagreeing.
Fine. If he wants to do it this way then two can play at this game. "Why do you like bullying others so much? Does it amuse you in some sick twisted way to see people around you suffer?"
He looks at me, an indescribable expression on his face. "I never had a chance in your eyes. I will always be the spoiled snobby bully to you."
"Why? Are you not?" I asks, wanting him to prove me wrong.
A smirk make its way to his face, "You haven't even seen my bad side yet. What about you? When will you stop following Lucas around and put yourself first?"
"Why are you so interested in me and Lucas?"
"That's not how the game works, Hazel." He grin at me with amusement in his eyes.
"You're the one who got off topic first," I defend myself, glaring at him. There was a silence between us. That was until my stomach decided to growl. Hearing this, Corbin grins harder. I lower my head in embarrassment.
