Harry pulled me and Grover along into the car. I wasn't paying attention. I felt numb. How could they have found me?
"Noelle, please talk to me." Harry's searching eyes tried to bring something out of me, but nothing came.
Harry gave up a minute later and started the truck. It rumbled to life, and Harry hurriedly backed out of the driveway and onto the lonely street.
"They haven't gotten a search warrant yet, so we can get away, but they'll be here soon enough," he explained. I finally looked at him. Where did he get this information?
"Try not to worry Noelle. I'll make sure you're safe." He put his hand on my knee, and I soon took it into my hands.
The first 40 minutes of the drive consisted of silence and Harry's mumbled I love you's into the back of my hand as he kissed it.
I tried to focus on the good side, but bad thought crept up onto the good ones and stabbed them with knifes of memories that were probably my parents' lies.
Where were we going? What was going to happen to us? Where would we stay? I didn't want to leave Harry. They were all I had now.
"We're going to stay with your old best friend, Cassie. Do you remember her?"
I searched my mind for a Cassie. When nothing came up, I looked at Harry and shook my head sadly.
"Hey, it's okay! You don't have to remember everything," Harry said as he kissed my hand again.
Grover whined and began to claw at the window closest to him. I looked back at him, and he looked at me. I knew that face.
"Harry?"
"Yeah?"
"Grove needs to pee."
Harry groaned, but turned to me and smiled and patted Grover on the head. When he turned back to the road he said, "Tell him I'll stop soon."
I laughed and kissed Grover on the head before repeating Harry's statement. Grover tried to lick my face, but I moved away fast enough to just miss it, and giggled back.
"Can you tell me a story that would help me remember Cassie?" I asked, leaning against Harry's shoulder and closing my eyes. I melted into his smell and voice, and before I knew it, I remembered Cassie.
"What shall we smoke today?" Cassie asked in her smooth country accent. I laughed and replied by throwing her a cigarette.
Her brown hair flowed behind her, and her sunglasses hid vibrant blue-green eyes. She smiled at me as I smiled at her and we smoked our worries away.
"How are you and Scott?" I asked her when we had slowed down and parked in an empty, abandoned parking lot. Smoke was everywhere.
"Yeah, um, that's over," she mumbled. I was surprised at her sudden quietness. Cass was never quiet.
"Cassie, what happened?" I asked. I tried to look her in the eyes, but she looked away from me.
"Cass, you know you can tell me anything. For fucks sake we're high right now, you should be begging to let me know."
Cassie sighed loudly, then removed her sunglasses swiftly. Before I had time to react to her eye, Cassie grabbed a tissue from a nearby package and wiped off some makeup on her cheek. She winced as she gingerly tried to take off the makeup.
"Fuck! Cassie, did he do this to you?" I yelled. Her eyes began to water, more makeup flowing onto her pale skin.
"You should see the bottom half of me," she mumbled. I gasped because it was the only thing I could think of doing.
"Cass, did he rape you?"
She fell into me. All that came from her that moment on were mumbled cries and sobbing. All I could think to do was whisper into her ear that it was going to be okay.
"I remember her."
