Fourth period. Halfway through and Mr. Benton is still going over homework I didn't do.

It's not my fault. I've just been working. That's all that really matters. It's how I provide for my family. There's nothing wrong with that right?

"Mr. Triska?"

"Huh?" I say as I raise my head up from my desk.

"The answer?" He asks.

"I don't know," I shrug, "Sorry."

"Okay then," he sighs, "It was 64."

"That was so simple," the boy next to me says, "why didn't you answer it? I mean this is an honors class after all."

"I didn't do the paper," I state coldly.

"Alrighty class," Mr. Benton says, "Now that we've gone over the homework, I'll hand you the test."

Excuse me?!

Great. I'm screwed.

He hands the tests to each of us. I don't remember learning any of this. Why am I so stupid. Why can't I remember when there is a test?!

But wait... the boy next to me. He seems like he knows what he's doing. He knew the answer to the homework so I assume he would know at least a few answers on this test right?

I take a quick peek at his-

"Ahem," Mr. Benton says from behind me.

Shoot. I didn't look for him. Now he caught me red handed.

"Sorry?" I shrug.

"I'll see you after class Mr. Triska," he says and takes my paper.

*****

Class is almost over. Just about thirty seconds.

"Last call for your tests," Mr. Benton says from the front, "There will be no extra time."

The bell rings. Everyone gets up out of their seats and leaves. I do to.

Except not really.

"Not you Mr. Triska," Mr. Benton says stopping me.

I sigh. This is gonna be a while.

"Nathan," Mr. Benton says after everyone leaves.

"Yeah, I know," I say, "I'm sorry I cheated, I know you'll have to give me a zero-"

"Nathan," he interrupts, "Listen, I'm not talking to you as a teacher, I'm talking to you as a friend. I know about your home situation. I want to give you a chance to really study for this test."

"So I can go?" I ask.

"No, I'm letting you off with an after school detention," he states, "but you will be able to take the test next week."

"Okay," I say, "May I leave now?"

"Yes, but one more thing," he says.

"Hm?" I reply.

"I want you to have a tutor to study for this test," he says.

"Wait! What? Why?" I say quick.

"Because," he states, "I feel as though it would benefit you."

"Who?" I ask.

"Simon Britton, he's in one of the other math classes but he is at the same level and he is very good in math," he says.

"Fine," I sigh.

Now... who's this Simon kid?
