I woke up this morning with sunlight drowning my room. I flung open the window to let the crisp, autumn air flow in. It was the weekend, and I had plans with Alex. She told me she was taking me somewhere special, but I had no idea. Honestly, I wasn't too fond of surprises, but I decided to let it slide for today.

I slept with my hair in a messy bun, but once I woke, I decided it would look better in a braid. My hair was long, to my butt, and cascaded down my back like a golden waterfall. I put a few bobbie pins in place of loose hairs, put on a light amount of make-up, and got dressed.

Before coming to terms with this whole gay thing, I hadn't realized how many plaid shirts I owned. I decided today was a nice day to embrace my inner gay, so I plucked a red and black flannel from my closet and paired it with dark denim jeans.

Just then, I heard my doorbell ring. With my mother downstairs, I grabbed my stuff and quickly went to answer the door. "I've got it!" I said, practically pushing her back into the couch.

And there stood Alex-- a freshly shaved haircut, casual attire, and a bouquet of daisies in her hand. "Figured roses were too cliché," she smiled as she handed them to me.

"They're perfect, thank you," I couldn't seem to wipe the smile off my face as I said that.

Mom being mom, decided it was a great idea to peek over the front door while I went to put my flowers in a vase. "Sarah, you're not gonna introduce me to your friend?"

"Sorry, mom. This is Alex. She's... in my psychology class," I lied. What else was I supposed to tell her? That Alex was indeed my girlfriend? Too soon for that one. Wouldn't want her to pass out, or worse.

"Well, nice to meet you Alex," Her tone was nothing but friendly, "You're welcome over any time."

"Thanks, Mrs. Hale, but today I'm taking Sarah out."

"Oh, maybe you can stay for dinner then?"

My eyes shot wide open, but with a reassuring look, Alex managed to calm me down. "Sure, dinner sounds nice." With a wave goodbye, we were off.

"May I ask where you're taking me? Or does everything have to be a surprise around here?" I asked jokingly as she drove to our hidden location.

"Surprises are more romantic,"

"Are they? Well, personally, I hate them."

"Trust me, you're gonna like this one." She looked over to me and smiled, using a free hand to hold mine. "I have the whole day planned for us." I know this was cliché, but all the blood rushed straight to my cheeks again. Her hand was so nice to hold, so much that it felt like home. I leaned my head back on the chair and closed my eyes, taking in all the beauty around me.

Finally, we pulled up to a park, vacant except for a few teenagers and some older people.

We parked and she took a huge picnic basket out of the trunk. "Thought it would be nice to start the day off with a picnic, no?" We found a nice spot on the grass and lay out a thin sheet. She sat the basket down and took out loads of great food-- turkey sandwiches, grilled cheese, chicken noodle soup (which I'm told is homemade), a bowl of fruit, and a salad.

"You sure know how to make a girl's knees go weak," I said, taking a bite of a turkey sandwich. I grabbed her hand, not caring if we were in public or not. And then, I kissed her.

I held her in my arms and hovered over her on the blanket, and I kissed her. Our lips mushed together with so much love and energy that we didn't want to stop.

I was making out with my girlfriend at a park, a public facility. Just thinking about it made my spine tingle with delight.

"Woah, save that for later," Alex winked, giving me a peck on the cheek.

We spent the morning holding hands and devouring delicious treats in the park, feeding birds and squirrels as they passed us by. From time to time, people passed us and gave us a smile, probably thinking we were sisters who were spending the weekend at the park.

Around one o'clock, we started packing up and making our way to our next destination. After driving for about ten minutes, we pulled up to a vintage music, shoved in the corner of the shopping center.

Walking in was like something from a movie. CD's, cassette tapes, and vinyl records filled the walls. There were also comic books in one section, and another section to listen to music.

"Come, I want you to listen to something," Alex took my arm and dragged me over to a music stand, one that had headphones connected to it so you could listen to music.

With a click of a button, music started to play from the headphones. Sweet melodies and soft lyrics made their way into my ears. I closed my eyes and swayed softy to the beautiful voice I was hearing. Alex looked at me while I listened, observing the way my hips moved and how happy I looked, and she smiled. Once the song was over, I turned to her.

"Birdy," she said, "One of my favorites. You like?"

"Of course. She has a unique voice."

Alex told me to rummage through a few CD's while she went elsewhere. I searched endlessly for a vinyl to buy her. I figured if she liked Daughter, she would most likely enjoy Mary Lambert, who sang about gay rights, body love, and acceptance.

I snatched the vinyl and quickly purchased it before she had a chance to find me. After the cashier rang it up, I shoved it into my bad.

A few seconds later, Alex found me. "Ready to go?" She smiled widely as she held my hand. I nodded. I couldn't wait for our next adventure.
