After the music store, we headed to a little coffee shop just on the edge of town. We walked in and instantly I smelled fresh baked pastries and fancy desserts. Once I spotted the chocolate chip cookies, I never wanted to leave. I felt like a little kid in a candy shop.
We got up to the cashier hand in hand, and I let Alex order for me. "Uh, we'll have three chocolate chip cookies, one hot coffee, and a medium tea. Decaf."
"Your total will be $8.64," Alex fished out a few bucks from her pocket and handed it to our cashier. With a ping, the register opened and he fished out some change from its slots. And that's when we heard the infamous line, the one cashiers all across the country said to each customer every day-- "Thank you and enjoy your day."
We waited patiently for our things, then took a table outside the café.
"Hopefully I ordered correctly," Alex smiled shyly. She gave me a medium tea and three chocolate chip cookies. I told her we could share, so we each took little bites from the cookies until they were gone.
"So, have you enjoyed the day so far?" By then, it was around 4:30, and it felt like the day had just started.
"Yeah, it's lovely." I smiled and grabbed her hand, trying to swallow a mouth full of chocolate.
"You've got a little something on your face," Alex giggled. I frantically tried to find my compact, but before I had the chance to, she took her thumb and wiped it off the corner of my mouth. "Chocolate." She took her finger and licked the remnants that were on my face.
"Thanks," I blushed. I still wasn't used to all of this, but I have to admit, it was way better than being with a guy.
By the time we were done chatting, it was nearing 6:30.
"Let's go, I have one more place to show you."
"Something else?" I giggled in disbelief. What more was there to do?
She took my hand and dragged me in the car, planting a kiss on my forehead before shutting the door and driving off.
The whole time I wondered where on earth we could be going now. My day was already perfect enough, and she had more plans? I couldn't believe it.
Just then, she parked the car and covered my eyes. "Promise not to peek."
"Who do you take me for?"
"Someone who peeks while playing Pin the Tail on the Donkey."
"Hey, don't judge. I'm sure you've done that too," I retorted, smiling. She took my hand and led me somewhere quiet. When she took her hand off my eyes, I noticed we were on a vacant hill. Both of us lay side by side in the grass.
"Sarah, look up,"
I did. The sky was illuminated with thousands of stars. It's almost as though someone threw a dark sheet over the earth, then specked it with intricate little diamonds. I don't think I had ever seen something so beautiful in my entire life. A smile was plastered on
my face as I held Alex's hand. We kissed under the moonlight, and together we took in the silence around us. I never thought silence could be beautiful, but at this moment, it sure was. It was as if time had stopped for everyone except us, and I closed my eyes and wished to the stars that it could stay like this forever.
"Sarah Hale, I'm so glad to have met you in that bar," Alex looked so beautiful under the crisp moonlight. Her blue eyes shone brighter than all the stars in the sky.
"I'm happy to say the same," I leaned down and kissed her once more. That night, we doused ourselves in darkness and awoke to see another day. Vibrant colors were painted across the sky today-- bright orange, deep purples, and luscious pinks. It was as if Picasso himself masked his paintbrush over the sky, a painting just for Alex and I.
"I never knew earth could be so beautiful," My mouth gaped open, taking in all the lovely scenery around me. The grass was wet and dewy and leaves all different colors made a security blanket around us. "I'm glad to be spending such a wonderful moment with you."
She squeezed my hand a little tighter and smiled up at the sunrise.
"Oh! I almost forgot-- I got you a little something," she rummaged in her bag and fished out something in shiny wrapping paper.
"Well, that makes two of us," I fished around in my tote and pulled out the vinyl.
"One--"
"Two--"
"Three!"
Both of us opened our gifts at the same time. I looked over to see Alex's face, if I had done well with my choosing.
"You like Daughter a lot, so I thought you could try something new. Mary Lambert, one of my favorites." I smiled up at her and she thanked me, giving me a kiss on the cheek and putting the vinyl into her bag. "Another to add to my growing collection," she squeezed my hand once again, "Do you like yours?"
I hadn't even gotten the chance to look at it yet, but once I had, I was thrilled-- my very own Birdy CD.
"I love it! I'm so excited to listen," I hugged the disc tightly and put it in my bag.
"I was thinking we could listen to it in the car while I take you back home," Her smile was so wide it outshone the sun. "I told your mom we'd be home for dinner last night. She must be worried sick."
"Eh, don't worry about her. I'm sure she'll be fine."
"Well, I don't want to keep her waiting any longer. Let's go."
Originally, we were supposed to leave right then and there, but we didn't. Instead we made out while listening to Birdy in her car. I couldn't think of a better day than this one.
