"You think Ellie and Jamie are the kids of Alpha Steward?", Macy exclaimed and instantly put her hand over her mouth as her voice rang through the whole room.
Alex looked amused at his mate and nodded his head.
"How do you know our last name? I'm pretty sure we never used it.", I wanted to know from Jamie.
"When we were with them, we used their last name, but you had a necklace from our mother, which they knew nothing about, and our last name - Steward - was engraved on the back of the pendant.", Jamie explained and pulled a necklace out of his jean pocket.
Shocked I looked at the golden necklace and when Jamie put it into my already waiting hands another flashback instantly hit me.
"That's for me, mommy?", a child's voice wanted to know happily and I saw the beautiful woman, who had her on her lap, nod her head in confirmation. Her long dark brown hair was pulled back in a ponytail and her crystal blue eyes beamed at the child cuddled up to her.
I looked so much like her now that only one reason seemed plausible: That woman was my mother and the child was apparently me. I could not had been older than four or five.
She took the pendant between two digits and pressed hard so that the child feared the pendant would break.
However, the golden piece of jewellery popped open and with a delight only children could feel, the young girl saw a picture of her family inside the pendant.
"That's us.", the child exclaimed giddily.
Her mother nodded her head in confirmation and explained in a soft voice: "That way will always be with you."
She then proceeded to show her daughter the backside of the pendant where their family's last name was engraved in it.
"So you'll always know where you come from."
Still in a daze from the flashback I put the pendant between two digits and pushed, just like I had just seen my mother do it.
"What are you doing?", Jamie wanted to know wide eyed, afraid that I would ruin the only thing that was left of our parents.
When the pendant popped open just like it had in my flashback, his eyes widened even more and shock took over.
"That's us.", I repeated the words I had spoken as a child and felt Daniel's hold on me tighten.
I wanted to scream at the unfairness of the situation, because while Jamie and I had lost our parents I had found my soulmate and I was sure that Jamie would found his mate soon as well.
The picture inside the pendant showed a powerful young man carrying a small girl. Beside him stood a beautiful and kind looking woman who had a small baby boy in her arms.
I shut my eyes not being able to see what we had lost any longer and brokenly asked a question, I feared I already knew the answer to.
"What happened to them?"
Alex cleared his throat and responded: "They were found dead 16 years ago and their children were missing. We all thought that whoever had murdered them had also killed their kids."
I nodded my head, tears running down my cheeks and felt someone wipe them away softly.
I knew it was not Daniel because the touch did not brought the addictive tingles.
More tears fell when I realized that it must be Jamie. Our roles were swapped now.
My baby brother the one I had raised and seemed like my own child, comforted his older sister now.
