A few weeks earlier
"You promise me that you're going to take care of him?", my voice pleadingly wanted to know from Alpha Red.
He seemed worried about my panicked state, but did not comment on it. I was glad that he did not ask any questions, because how could I ever explain that we were running from our guardians.
"I promise you, Ellie!"
His words sounded sincere, but how often had I already fallen for honest sounding words?
It did not matter now. Alpha Red had an honourable reputation in the werewolf world and he did look like a man I could trust.
"Do you swear, Alpha?", I wanted to reassure myself that he was not letting anything happen to my little brother
I noticed how the man's posture next to the Alpha grew rigid and I realized that it probably did not come over well for me - a mere human - to demand such things from an Alpha.
However, the Alpha did not seem faced by it. He just continued to worriedly stare into my eyes, wanting to know why we were on the run. But I could not tell him. As much as I wanted and needed to confide in someone, it could not be Alpha Red. I had already, almost forcefully, dragged him into our business and the less he knew the better for him. I just hoped that they would not be able to follow our trace.
Everybody I had seen in Alpha Red's pack seemed pretty muscular and their physique calmed me further. I knew the Redwood pack was the best chance I had for hiding Jamie. He was a werewolf as well and I hoped that Alpha Red would protect him from any harm coming his way. However, I was not a werewolf and I thought about this long and hard and decided to leave after bringing Jamie here. If they did somehow manage to follow me, they would never guess that Jamie and I had split up. During my time with them I had never even once let Jamie out of my sight, so why should I do it now? I counted on that predictable reason to draw their attention into my direction and not Jamie's.
"I swear Ellie!", the Alpha told me solemnly.
He once again took in my shaking stance and asked: "Is there anything we can do for you?"
"I..."
Could I really demand anything else from the Alpha? He had already helped me tremendously and I would leave here with a debt I could never repay.
"I know you can't stay here, let me help you some other way.", the Alpha tried once again and carefully put a hand on my shoulder.
The warmth his hand radiated instantly made its way into my cold body and I wanted to sigh in relief. What harm could be done if I took him up on his generous offer?
"Could I maybe change cars with someone here?", I asked weakly, knowing it was probably the best for keeping me off the radar for longer.
The Alpha nodded his head once, seemingly satisfied that he got me to let him help me.
Suddenly the door was opened and Jamie stormed inside.
Relief was the prominent emotion on his face, but when he saw my eyes his face fell instantly.
"You're leaving me.", he stated brokenly and I immediately brought him in for a hug.
He burried his face in my shoulder and I could feel his tears soaking into my dark blue sweater.
Tears were running down my cheeks as well, but I knew that I had to be strong now.
"It's the only thing I can do to protect you Jamie.", I told him with a strong voice. I had no idea where this strength was coming from, but I was glad that I had discovered it now.
