Shifters

Chapter two

The bell signaling the start of first period rang loud in my ears as I zoomed up the stairs to my first class. I cursed my new sensative hearing as my ears rung well after the bells had stopped.

"This is a sheet describing what you must do to ace your final project." I could hear Professor Kelp say when i reach the science room doors. "You will need partners for this but I already picked your lab partners and have them written on this sheet of paper." The class groaned as Professor Kelp held up the sheet of paper.

I took this moment to open the door and tip toe to my desk.

"Miss Shade." I flinched as Prof. Kelp said my name. Busted. "I see you've decided to join us. Please, do have a seat."

The class snikered as i took my usual seat next to Shawn.

Shawn has been my best friend scince grade 4 when i pushed another kid in a snow bank for smashing his snowman. We both got detention but we became good friends afterwords.

"Late again Viv?" Shawn teased. "What was it this time?"

"Slept in." Which really i did. Only i got up at 5:30 instead if 5 so running my morning drills with father took an extra half hour then normal, making me late for school. Of course, I couldn't tell Shawn this because what normal teenager runs drills with their father at 5am to improve running and indurence? Shawn doesn't know I'm a shifter and it has to stay that way.

"I'll now read you your partners name." The class hushed and all eyes were on Prof. Kelp, all hoping to get their best friend.

Shawn nudged my arm. "Hey. Maybe you'll get put with Kayon~" He laughed, teasing me. I shot him a glare then sighed.

"I doubt it." Shawn knew how much I liked Kayon. He was sweet, handsom, strong, and even a little bit nerdy. His hair was a redish brown and his vibrant green eyes could keep me distracted for hours. I guess I've liked him ever since grade 8 graduation when he danced with me when no one else would.

Professor Kelp clears his throat and began listing off names. "Maya Keln and Kayon Harthworn." My heart sunk. Maya and Kayon? I know Maya was one of my best friends and all, but a part of me was really hoping I'd get Kayon.

Professor Kelp continues reading off names but I tune out untill i hear my name being called. "Vivian Shade and Cam Shade." My eyes widen as i look at my older brother from across the classroom.

He gives a smug smile and a wave, I glare at him. The only reason he's in my science class is because he failed his last year science and had to retake it.

"Shawn Sven and Kayla Strite." Professor Kelp finishes.

"Look on the bright side." Shawn says to me. "At least I'm with the school hottie." He wiggles his eyebrows at me, blue eyes filled with mischief.

"Shut up Shawn." I playfully push him and he laughs, running a hand through his short dark hair.

"Vivian." Says a voice to my left.

"Yeah?" I ask and saw it was Maya. "Oh hey. Congratulations on your partner." My smile was weak but I think i pulled off being happy for her.

She shrugs. "Yeah I guess..." Her face turns to the other side of the classroom. She trys to hide her blush with her long black hair but I still see it.

"Who are you blushing at?" I smirk.

Maya's head spins back to me and her green eyes are wide. "N-No one!"

"Ooohhh!!! Maya's got a crush! Maya's got a crush!" Shawn chants. Her blush deepens as she smacks Shawn in the head. "Ow!"

"Quite it Shawn!" She yell-whispers.

While they bicker I peek around the classroom to see who Maya may have been blushing at. The only ones on that side are geeky Greg and... My brother.

I gasp. Both Shawn and Maya look at me. "Get out!" I say to Maya with a huge smile on my face. She looks confused. "Get out!!" I repeat. "You like Cam!?"

Her hand slaps down on my mouth. "Sssshhhhh!!!" She hissed. "Do you want the whole world to know? Well i don't!!" I couldn't help but laugh a little. "Ok ok. Laugh all you want."

Shawn's jaw hangs open. "No way..."

Maya rolls her eyes then puts on her best puppy dog face. "Please switch lab partners with me! please!!!!"

I was about to say as if but realization hit me first. Kayon was Maya's partner. That means if we switched i could be Kayon's partner.

"I don't think Professor Kelp will-" Shawn began but i cut him off.

"Sure!" Maya's eyes lit up. "We just have to run it by Cam, Kayon and Professor Kelp first."

Maya was smiling from ear to ear now. "Thank you Vivian!!" She hugged me and I laughed.

"Wow. I didn't know you liked my brother that much." She shrugged then returned back to her seat a few rows behind us. Normally we would sit together, all three of us, but the desks are set into pears of two and Prof. Kelp already had arranged seating on the first day of school. Shawn and I having seats next to each other was just a plus.

Looking at the clock my excitment went through the wall. It was almost 2nd period. Only three more to go before i can go home and father will teach me about the rules of wolf shifter.

Usually shifters learn about their own shift first then all their family members and so on until they know every shift. That way they can teach the lessons to their future children. All shifters are expected to mate with other shifters to continue the shifters existence.

The bell rang and I grab my book and run out the door leaving Shawn yelling after me to wait up. I didn't stop though, my excitment for after school was much too great. All i wanted was to zoom through school and get home to father.
