"This dorm is...nice", I said as I look around Aaron's dorm. It has 4 loft-style beds, where at the bottom is a desk and at the top are the beds with little curtains around them for privacy, how cute. There is a girl sitting in one of the desks there, do they have co-ed dorms?
"Ni hao", I say to the unknown girl sitting at the desk looking at some kind of show, trying to be polite. After her lack of response, I just look at her intrigued and then turn to Aaron, "is she your roommate?"
"No, she is my roommate's cousin, Carly", he says while touching her arm so she would look at us.
Carly takes out her earphones, so she wasn't just being rude after all, she just didn't notice us, looks at me and then towards Aaron and Camila, they start exchanging words in Chinese that I clearly don't get. They must be talking about me, hopefully on how charming I am and not on how bad I must look right now. I continue to stand there awkwardly for a few more seconds until Carly looks my way again and politely greats me.
"Hello! My name is Carly, so nice to meet you Sapphire, are you a volunteer? Where are you from?" she finishes off, coming closer to me.
"Hey, Carly, yes! I'm one of the volunteers, from Mexico." I say proudly, "oh, and please call me Sapph" I add with a smile.
"Okay," she says my way and then turn her head towards Camila, "she is so cute!" she compliments me, before heading back to where we found her earlier.
I let out a small laugh in response, because I don't know how else to respond. That was very sweet though.
Second compliment in the day? Chinese people really know how to make a girl feel welcomed and appreciated. I can get use to this, China is awesome.
"Sapph, you can take a shower there," Aaron says pointing to the weird, and may I add small cubicle in the dorm, which I will also like to point out, was like a translucent white. "And the restroom is next to it" he finishes pointing to the cubicle next to the shower, which was also translucent white.
"Great, thanks", I say trying not to sound freaked out as I was on the inside.
I walk towards the restroom first, cause girl, between us it has been sometime since I last went, and a girl can only hold it for so long. I open the door and oh my, was I surprised. Instead of the toilet I am used to use, there is this weird hole on the ground. How could I forget that they use different toilets in Asia? Why didn't I googled how to use one, or watched a YouTube video about it. How do I stand in these? Which way should I face? How low am I supposed to squat?
"Hey, Camila? Can you come here and answer me a question?" I ask with my head out the door so she could look at me.
"Sure, I'm coming"
Once she is outside the door, I open it and shyly ask, "Which way am I supposed to face? Should I look at the hole or face away from it?"
"You are supposed to look that way, to the wall, facing the hole", she answers laughing a bit, apparently she finds my confusion funny. Facing the hole, haha. I'm too immature.
"Alright, I got this. Thanks"
I proceed to close the door and get down to business. Okay so one foot on each side, on the... thingy there, alright done. Now I pull down my jeans and underwear, hold on... what am I supposed to do with them? If I squat will I pee on them? There has to be a better way. Whatever I will roll with it, just try pushing them out of the way. Done. Now I only have to squat and pee, how low though? Girl, I know I can't hold a squat that long, I'm going to just do a half squad and pee really fast. Yes! I'm doing it. I knew I could do anything. It just occurred to me that the people in the dorm can hear me pee, how embarrassing. WHY IS THERE PEE STILL COMING OUT?! I'm getting tired, I should really exercise more. Did I just pee a little on my shoe??? Oh phew, no, that's just dirt.
